It's impossible to discuss anything with americans because they start saying stupid terms like this.

Surviving the destruction of his GOUF during the Destiny's debut is the most egregious example of plot armor in the CE and one of the most egregious examples in the franchise.

And she didn't even get a proper last fight cuz Mika decided he'd rather spend most of his remaining life force killing randos

Aside from being 'that group of aces,' they were such relative nobodies that I'm surprised that they weren't simply killed off in a super unsatisfying and offhand manner.

The definition of plot armor is when a character survives something lethal with no explanation. These characters by definition did not have plot armor. The writer was definitely biased towards them but they never survived a lethal attack, explosion, etc.

I believe Watts was killed in the novelization and his ghost was aiding Bannana in shooting down Angelo. OVA had them all survive.

They had their entire arc cut out in the OVA. They participate against Full Frontal's assault on the General Revil and fight Full Frontal towards the end of the books and managed to disarm him of his bazooka. Then they fight the sleeves and Angelo where Watts dies

The definition of plot armor is characters being protected from death or injury due to plot. Sometimes that means they survive what definitely should have killed them and sometimes it means they just get lucky all the time.

Neither of which happened to the characters in the OP.

seriously, how he did survive the Hyaku Shiki getting blown up?

not only that, how did he survive in outer space long enough to get rescued? it is a vast space and it seems that everyone fricked off after the battle, so who picked him up?

Hyaku Shiki didn't blow up, the ship did. Since the Hyaku Shiki is in one piece, so is Char. Also right when the ship is exploding, a loose wall falls on the Hyaku Shiki. An inert piece of the ship basically shielded him from most of the explosion. Also, anti-beam coating is supposed to be an ablative coating, resisting beams by absorbing heat from the beam's impact and burning/evaporating away. It could have helped prevent some damage from the high temperatures of the gas and debris from the ship explosion.

      >not only that, how did he survive in outer space long enough to get rescued? it is a vast space and it seems that everyone fricked off after the battle, so who picked him up?
No explanation. Keep in mind that while it seems like everyone fricked off, that's just the POV of the main characters. In the background there's still a ton of stuff going on. Rescue and medical units could come after the battle to try to save whoever they can. Junkers and salvagers would pounce on the chance to haul away valuable materials and intact tech. You might as well ask how Char survived at the end of MSG when the last time we saw him, he was only in a normal suit at the even larger and more chaotic battle of A Baoa Qu.

Him being found is actually not that hard to imagine. Side 3 was assisting the Titans in resupply and other crap during the last few episodes (but they don't seem to do any fighting. If I remember correctly, Zeta's ending even had the Argama next to a Salamis right before it left, so Side 3 finding him isn't too hard to believe.

At the end of the movies you see Char's sillouette as he looks out of the flagship's windows, headed to Axis. Don't remember if that scene was in the TV version, watched the movies again the other day when they went up on Youtube

Between this guy and Suzaku it's a hard choice, but god do I hate Banana. He's not just a bad pilot, he's a dullard, a moron, and there was no point in Unicorn where I understood why he wasn't shot in the neck by every character that ever met him.

The Acguy and Gouf Custom had them dead to rights. Might not have killed all of them, but they sure as hell would have killed a few of them.

08th MS team is dumb campy military action stuff, without the plot armor it doesn't work.
It would be like if characters in Fast and the Furious stayed dead or suffered legit consequences.

This. It’s in the same vein as schlocky military flicks like dirty dozen or inglorious bastards

People think it’s the most serious Gundam series when it’s significantly lower stakes and less “grounded” than WitP and 0083.

          It's an interesting juxtaposition.
08th MS feels that way to most people because aesthetically it has its feet in the dirt and calls back to Vietnam. It has a "day in the life if a soldier" feel to it in the vein of old war serials like M*A*S*H, but also like those types of shows it isn't afraid of being fantastical at times for the sake of dramatic flair (Shiro dodging the Zaku's Gunfire with a bazooka at close range).
Full Metal Panic operates in a similar tonal territory.

FMP was different because it was nonsensical from the getgo. Lambda Driver units are basically fitted with super robot anime powers.
