>every season a different big name actor
>he's killed at the end of the season
literally the biggest flaw in the series
He was supposed to be in two seasons when he was signed on, but I think David wrote himself in a corner with how to handle the Tony B thing. I really think there is a scrapped Tony B flys to Italy storyline or something.
Ralph was introduced in the beginging season 3 and killed at the end of season 4
Phil was introduced in the begining season 5 and killed at the end of season 7
Ritchie was the first time they did it so he gets a pass, and Ralph made it two seasons, but by the time Tony B rolls around, the instant you see him you know he's doomed
None of those guys were nearly as famous as Buscemi at the time.
The biggest flaw is the ending was pathetic and then chase came out and said what happened in an open ending like a hack.
>The biggest flaw is the ending was pathetic
Let's be real, how many people would be b***hing like all hell to this day if Tony was killed?
Nobody b***hes about the breaking bad ending
season 5 sucks. season 4 had the perfect ending
>Nobody b***hes about the breaking bad ending
The point is the ending in still talked about and that's what David wants. The ending will be talked about and debated long after we are all dead and that gives it immortality as a show.
Honestly ending in general kinda fricking suck all around for any show. It's hard to write a "good" ending because nothing ever "ends" in reality. Even when the entire unvierse ends, it doesn't "end".
The Sopranos did what you're describing, just ended in a mundane setting before whatever theory happened on screen. That's why it was a good ending. No homosexual shit about le antihero realizing he's bad and then sacrificing himself like Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bad was a terrible ending. Like Planet of the Apes "You blew it up!", it's such a fricking crass moment of realisation and the scene at the end where Walt's in the shitty diner is where it should've stopped with Walt, just show him ringing Skyler one last time, then cut to her and her shitty life and end it there. Just ruin and bitterness.
There's so many moments in that last run where Walt can see the damage he's done and when I watch BB a 2nd time, it's a bit too cheesy. A-Team vibes.
Sopranos still bears up with repeated re-watches. There's different stuff to notice and a fricking great ensemble cast - the best parts of Sopranos are just a bunch of "friends" doing fricked up shit and breaking balls.
It seems pretty evident to me that the writers of BB were simply unwilling to commit to a genuinely depressing, realistic ending, which is what Ozymandias was. To me that's the "real" ending of the show, and a lot of other people I talk to IRL about it agree, despite admitting it's maybe too depressing. But those last two episodes.... man, they fricking suck. The most tacked on, unnecessary, lame "but actually he made things better" ending since fricking crime and Punishment.
The constant pulling of punches on BB is one of the reasons why I don't rank it alongside the true all-time greats like The Sopranos and The Wire
Yeah, this.
I do agree with you, but I think the "whacky mob hijinks" were a good contrast, the tragedy/comedy aspects were mostly very well done.
I'd add Firefly into the Sopranos/Wire melange, in-universe, it felt like the characters were real and knew each other - you actually felt like those worlds continued off screen. Boardwalk too.
that quote was taken out of context it was in reference to the original planned ending of season 4. why would you spread these lies on a Malaysian basket weaving forum
he originally wanted it to end with Tony going into a tunnel on the way to a meeting with New York with tensions high and it cut to black, to probably assume that Tony never left that meeting alive.
He just never could let go of that being a kino idea, but the "cut to black" wasn't as organic as his original idea. After hearing this story it's obvious he intended Tony to die though
This is the only Star Wars film I have any interest in seeing. Vito gets hired on as leader of a works gang on the Death Star. Queer hijinks + scamming building materials, until bounty hunter Paulie shows up.
The whole fricking Cleaver arc was bad and jumped the shark, Sir fricking Ben Kingsley. Would've been better if they went to Miami to do porno + just given AJ the Bing to run+could've had a decent/realistic arc where AJ fricks all that up.
65 something year old Dominic Chianese, 55 year old David Proval, middle aged Cypher from the matrix, and a 70 year old Frank Vincent aren't exactly what I'd call big name actors
The giving a character the spotlight so they can be a one season long antagonist and get killed is the same as every other HBO crime drama like The Wire and Boardwalk Empire
it's a curious thought experiment what the show would be like if it was only 4 seasons like Boardwalk though
>we'll never find Tony B's daughter
>we'll never find out how Tony manged to get Tony B's sperm out of prison in order to have the boys (yes that happened)
>we'll never see Tony B as a certified massage therapist
WHAT A FRICKIN BLOW!
It would be awesome if they did a prequel movie or something to revisit these things
Tony B felt unnatural in the show. The show tries to sell him as a genius savant but he acts like the biggest moron in the whole show. I don't think it was some deep subersion on intelligence or anything. Also steve buscemi just doesn't fit in with the rest of the cast.
>Also steve buscemi just doesn't fit in with the rest of the cast.
That was the point of the charchter anon.
The scene where Tony S and Tony B discuss B's IQ is one of the cringiest exchanges in the series
>The scene where Tony S and Tony B discuss B's IQ is one of the cringiest exchanges in the series
>Tony later admits to Johnny that he has a 136 IQ
Yes two cousin mobsters both with genius level IQs. Sounds like an anime.
I think Buscemi (initiially) felt a bit anachronistic. If I remember correctly, he was one of the first "Major Actors" to do a whole season of a big tv series and the first couple of episodes he's in it's just a bit weird to see "MOVIE STAR", but once the season goes on he settles well and feels like a real character in that world.
His difficult interactions with his kids were really well done.
Buscemi directed a fair few episodes and I think he contributed to the script/plot too. He directed Pine Barrens too.
Steve Buscemi in any tough guy role has always been silly. I know he's Italian, but he's not that kind of Italian.
Tony B was a good character in his own, I actually wished we saw more of him. It’s just that his intro is jarring and I could never buy his connection with Tony and the others. Everyone loved this guy but no one fricking mentioned him ever before. I’m universe there’s no good excuse for this. Tony’s dilemma over killing him and the montage of clips when they were younger didn’t do anything for me. Everything about him felt so disconnected. He didn’t fit in seamlessly with the characters like Richie and Ralphie
he was very underwritten. the shit with his daughter? just made him staring at Meadow look creepy as frick. his wife? completely random that she just loses it on him out of nowhere. Also it was just distracting that it was Buscemi imo
>the shit with his daughter? just made him staring at Meadow look creepy as frick.
kek
I always interpreted this scene to be him being rapey towards her. When she responds by talking about his daughter, I thought it was to diffuse the situation and not ruin the big party. Are you telling me that's not what it was?
that's exactly how i took it the first time i saw the scene, but everyone else seems to think Tony B was just depressed about how Meadow turned out and he has no idea who his daughter is. He bails completely after this, maybe because he doesn't want to be reminded of it. Just poorly executed though
I thought he ran away after because he knew he did something creepy
KEK
>oh shit, Meadow caught me lookin at her tiddies
I don't even know if Tony B would have cared. He literally filmed Carm's ass for Sopranos home movies
Introducing some guy who annoys Tony for 12-20 episodes and then goes away again was 30% of the show's runtime. 20% was cool mob stuff. 10% was memes.
But the remaining 40% of the show was boring, pointless Dr. b***h Lady, Carmella, A.J. and Meadow shit, bullshit about how Big Pussy's wife is mad or something, and frick-ass-boring Tony's coma dreams shit.
It wasn't a good show, there were just good parts that are now the only shit everyone talks about. I don't think that point needs to be made any more clear that that huge embarrassing piece of shit movie. It's trash.
It’s a character drama with the mob stuff as the backdrop, that’s always been the core.
>blah blah
yeah it's a bad show they had X amount of screentime and X times .3 amount of interesting things to put into it.
>hating the therapy and family scenes
unironically filtered, and i do not usually like using that word
but the show is first and foremost a character study and not meant to be a straight-forward mob thriller
on rewatches i'd argue that the mob stuff gets more cringe and lame whereas the character drama gets better every time and holds up much better
It's a pretty good show. I think meadows arc is done well. Junior is funny. The therapy sessions were silly for the most part. It was worth a watch but that's all id say.
I feel like anons re-watch The Sopranos so much that it was only a matter of time where they just whine about tiny little details. It's like me when I was a kid where I would watch the first three Star Wars over and over until I fricking hated them
Are you referring to the OP? Because I am the OP and this is my first time watching The Sopranos and I have a lot of complaints, but then again I am a loser who watches a lot of tv shows, cartoons, movies, anime, etc.
What you are describing here is the entire life of the dumb noisy morons who fill most of this board with their white noise.
If the Sopranos ended when you were in high school and you still talk about it on Cinemaphile a lot because you crave repetitive stimulus, you should probably gack yourself before the end of 2024.
>re-watching the first three star wara movies until I hated them
Glad I wasnt the only moron which did this.
Is the fact that Tony kills or has nearly everyone killed in his crew and then goes to war at the end of the show undermanned a purposeful thing? Chrissy got some pussy I wanted, he better go. Haha.
The show has so many characters and it’s about Tony so a lot of stuff has to be off screened. This isn’t a major flaw for me a but a minor nitpick. For instance, 9 episodes into s6 we learn that Chrissy has a new girl and he’s starting a family. Or in the s5 finale, there was someone ratting on Johnny Sack and New York
