At that time Depp was a nobody though, that’s why Stone gave him a more background role. He even had to remove multiple scenes with Lerner in them because he thought Depp was prettier than Sheen, and that would cause Lerner to steal Taylor’s thunder as a character.

He's perfectly fine. He's supposed to be out of place amongst the soldiers. He's a wealthy college boy who enlisted to fighting in a war that has nothing to do with his country while the rest of the poor fricks are working class draftees who don't want to be there.
