I think it’s finally time Cinemaphile and the world at large admit this movie is massively overrated.

The point of citizen Kane is that every movie after it is basically just citizen Kane. It was so groundbreaking at the time that watching it now it feels like derivative garbage since you will have seen every aspect of the film in the movies that came after it
I am Timmy Turnstile's wife and I need Brian for love making. Timmy can wear my panties and watch.
I actually do enjoy the movie, but I feel like anybody who goes into it actually expecting the greatest movie ever made, will be disappointed.
Agreed. It’s a good movie, but the hype surrounding it leads people to be disappointed. It doesn’t help that most people today are unfamiliar with Kane’s irl inspiration, and that the secret of rosebud is now common knowledge.
I actually watched Citizen Kane this week, I avoided it for a long long time as I expected some kind of political thriller with some interesting shots
I think it's a very good movie that I didn't feel like skipping at all, and it had a gut punch line "you don't love me.... you want me to love you!"
I think at its core its a solid fricking movie and the visuals just enhance it, even for today's standards I would rate it very highly
the one criticism I had of it would be the opening exposition dump, I think if you edit that out the movie is even better as you discover through flashbacks who he was
>even for today's standards
huh, todays standards are lower than they've ever been. you can go see films in cinemas by the name Fall (two girls trapped high place) and Beast (lion chase people!), or you can go see wonderful oscar bait like Hidden Figures and The Woman King
The acting was incredible too. You can tell that his wife was going to go back with him when he finally told her that it would be about her and things would be different, then he finished with "You can't do this to me" and her face changes and that was it.
Citizen KINO
I order Brian to hammer a nail into TImothys penis and it was connected to a plank of wood so then when Timmy has to use the bathroom he has a plank of wood nailed to him he has to sit awkwardly on the pot to even fit
Not even being edgy or whatever but I genuinely think it is overrated but I think a large part of why they're regarded so highly is because they were groundbreaking at the time
Kazan should have the respect Welles did. Welles over the tops theatrics disappears in thin air to history. while Kazan's films are eternal because they're human first.
I finally watched it for the first time a few nights ago after getting into classic kinography a couple years ago. It's impressive to see something on the technical level of Hitchwiener's best from a first time director at the age of 25. Also, The Lady from Shanghai is surrealism kino and I recommend it if you haven't watched it.
>The Lady from Shangha
What's so good about it? Just watched the first 30 minutes on your recommendation and nothing special so far.
lol what ever its marits it is essentially a leftist hit piece of Willliam Randolf Hurst
leftoids really hated him at the time.
its literal propaganda/ big budget trolling just like they do today
Simpleton

It's a great movie but I'm pretty sure critics just arbitrarily defined it as the greatest movie ever because they needed to legitimize cinema as an art form. Citizen Kane was their candidate for the foundation. In general though there doesn't need to be a single movie considered the best.
yes people expect too much, great is often just really good, with no flaws. Kane is excellent, so is Hitchwiener's Vertigo, but it is the Kazan films that are transcending cinema into the soul of man.
I don't know anything about this movie besides a closeup of a guy saying "rosebud" which I post a gif of any time I see a prolapsed anus posted on this site
>It's the best movie ever made because... uh... it invented some techniques or something?
Never understood his argument. A shitty movie can be the first to do something. Does that automatically make it good?
welles being 25, but surrounded himself with the best of the best. spielberg made duel at the same age, in 10 days with 10 days of editing, on a tv movie budget. I think Duel > Citizen Kane and is the greatest debut ever
>I think Duel > Citizen Kane
Yeah? Well, I think you're gay.
I think King Kong is a much more impressive movie technically. Nobody ever calls that the best movie ever made.
>BIG MONKE GOOD
kys
>MONKE
Go back to tiktok, zoomer.
king kong is good
yeah persona gets better and better as the years go. its weird since bergman was never that abstract. he just went weird on that one.
King Kong inspired an ABBA song, so it’s a better movie than Citizen Kane.
>in 10 days with 10 days of editing
didn't know that... how fricking great is duel
Have you actually watched Citizen Kane
You're gay plus I just learned last night that the Bluray disc 1 copy of the 4k release and Bluray release have a manufacturing error in the film that at 30 minutes the contrast fricks up for the rest of the film. You can ask criterion for a replacement.
Vertigo overtook as the critics favorite many years ago. And I think that Persona is ahead of it now too.
The new poll is supposed to come out this year so we’ll see if Vertigo is still on top
Why do they always pick the worst movies? I mean, Vertigo isn't bad, but it's the worst of Hitchwiener's most well known movies. Not even trying to be contrarian here. There are so many great classics, but they always put the worst ones at or near the top.
True Vertigo isn't that good
Duel is hella impressive but no.
Persona is absolutely fantastic and might be better. It was also made in 66. Big difference.
King Kong is impressive for it's time, but it doesn't hold up nearly as well as Citizen Kane does.
Kane is one of the top 100 movies and maybe one of the top 10 movies, and did it by being very unhollywood. Which was incredibly tough to do in Hollywood at the time. Even many of it's contemporaries suffered from meddling by the studios to fit into a certain box. Kane benefits in contrast to many of those movies for not suffering from the same issues. It gives it more of a timeless feel.
critics seem to prefer movies that are rewatchable and I think of hitchwiener's films, its the one that they feel has the most to offer to subsequent rewatches.
That's fair, I guess. I loved watching Rear Window for the first time, but it just doesn't have the same impact when you know what happens. Still, I think they could have found something better than Vertigo.
yes Psycho is the true Hitchwiener masterpiece. It is the film he managed to advance his style and achieve something far bigger than the sum of its parts. Vertigo tries way too hard.
it is just a low IQ slasher flick. there is no hitchwiener masterpiece. He isn't in the pantheon of greats, he just makes capeshit.
>capeshit
I don’t think you know what that means.
Why would anyone watch a movie more than once?
subsequent watches can reveal new things. More abstract, less plot centric movies become more understandable. And as a person ages, they may have different perspectives on a film's quality.
I have no idea what makes Vertigo so uniquely acclaimed. Plenty of other classic films have much more depth.
Fun fact: Ben Mankiewicz, long-time cohost of The Young Turks, is the son of Herman Mankiewicz, who wrote Citizen Kane.
Lotta plebeians who don't appreciate avant garde kinematography and abstract surrealist thought ITT
I think its a good movie because of the creative shots, it just looks cool and keeps energy throughout. It shouldn't be the baseline for goat movie though it was just ALRIGHT, the third man had cooler stuff
Never seen it
