Platitudes aside. Soulbro has a very obvious outsider's opinion on nerd culture and it's especially obvious with visual novels. Class of '09 is billed as the anti-visual novel for people who don't like visual novels. But this is based solely on the fact that you play an abrasive protagonist that turns down all of her potential suitors. Sometime that has been common to visual novels for so long that its been parodied in anime like Gekkan Shoujo. Class of '09 really only got popular because vtuber tryhards like pipkin pippa played it.

2016 was the year the election tourists came to the site since the r/TheDonald got purged by the Reddit mods, but that was only one specific group of Redditors. 2020 on the other hand was when a massive influx of Reddit & Twitter tourists started flooding the site, since Reddit went full USSR on it's users. Even subreddits that weren't "right-wing" got purged by mods. Also it was during this time when mootkun stepped down as an admin of Cinemaphile & a huge influx of Discord /leftypol/ trannies took over janitor positions. Your graph actually represents the janny troony infiltration of the site. Cinemaphile & /misc/ outed those jannies as being demented otaku jannies. Hence where the term "tranime" came from.

Then again, the visual novel genre isn't that very respectable. I read them regularly, and the only visual novels that are actually worth reading is just The House in Fata Morgana and maybe Narcissu. The others are just animu slop.

People have been complaining about post-modern ironic meta writing for literal decades now. But I think the best breakdown is that meta-awareness and irony have no redemptive qualities. It's too cynical and nihilistic for optimism. Too self-referential and self-aware to be played straight and taken seriously. And too dependent on it's original inspiration to be inspiring. So all that's left are these negative functions. Irony and meta-aware writing isn't capable of being genuine. It can only be a crude takedown of what's come before with no room to grow or develop. Class of '09 fits right into this. The protagonist can only ever be a cynical person attacking as the author's attack on typical romance visual novels. So, she can't have character growth because that would require sincerity in a story that has been nothing but insincere up until this point.

You think it's possible to do a regression story? Since they're trying to do cynical and nihilistic deconstruction, by having the character worsen via the experience be a better plan?

            Anonymous

You can have the character worsen. That's your standard Greek tragedy. But nihilism and cynicism is only part of the problem. Ironic writing is disingenuous and can't be made into something genuine once that line has been crossed. Nicole has already been shot, arrested for drug dealing, committed suicide and murdered in the game's multiple endings. Yet none of these endings were taken seriously and were instead written with total irreverence. Because, as a meta-commentary on the multiple endings of your standard visual novel, class of '09's endings are all bad ends. You can't tell a tragic story and constantly elbow and wink at your audience.

Most VNs are low key about dating/romancing women to be honest. In Hanachirasu, you could either leave with a girl out of love for a person or fight your battle out of your love for violence.

What I am saying is that he knows extremely basic stuff that someone new to the medium would know as well. He is not an expert(I would argue that you have to know japanese in order to be one considering how shit the translations are and how few of them are actually translated) and using that animation as a reference he doesn't have a good knowledge about anime either. Just like the ddlc guy who knew like 6 vns and a few anime and said in an interview that he thought cute girls but horror was somehow unique.

From what I notice, nerds aggressively nitpick stuff that doesn't matter if they feel that the material makes fun of them.

They complain about stuff like Nicole being a flat character lacking development, even though the vast majority of cartoon/comic characters are flat characters like Spongebob. Nicole hates geek media, so I guess they don't really like her for that reason. Even though 2009 high school american girls wouldn't be major fans of it as well.

I love geek media, but I am not surprised if normies thought that it was a dumb hobby.

Yeah, I can see that you don't really get it. Marx wasn't a post-modernist writer. Marx was a modernist writer. This kind of writing came after him. And it wasn't common in mythology and theatre plays. Because those stories were genuine. Oedipus was a genuine tragedy. It was a story about a man who ruined his own life. Post-modern stories like Seinfeld, Velma and Class of '09 are disingenuous. Because they're more a commentary on other stories. The story they're telling isn't the focus. It's just a vehicle for the writers to make ironic comments on what other stories would typically do in a similar narrative. Besides all that, the author of Class of '09 really doesn't know his genre. Because romance visual novels have already been parodied to death. Soulbro is late to a party that finished years ago.

Not at all lol, each of the routes has a unique theme to it and it has something to say about America. It is told in the most hilarious entertaining way out there because its told by a sociopathic traumatized drug addicted teen who stopped caring after losing control of the events that occurred in her life.

There's nothing that class of '09 says about America that isn't safe. Stuff that everybody already agrees with. Soulbro doesn't even seem to have controversial opinions and if he does then he's not sharing them. He's only sharing his bad writing.

      >Postmodern is just making fun of other stories and doing meta commentary shit
Good to know Don Quixote and The Clouds from 417 BC are all postmodern works.

How do we regain sincerity as a culture? The irony pill really feels like culture losing it's innocence and we just can't go back. But it's fricking exhausting now that everything has to be self aware and agenda driven rather than narrative driven.
I like a good parody now and then. But now it's just the norm for anything made by English speakers. Even fap bait is ironic now.

To be fair to the irony pill. A lot of this kind of writing was a reaction to the insincere saccharine writing of the sixties and seventies. Where all of the characters would have their episodic problem fixed within the same episode. I also think we're already fighting this kind of writing by seeing the problem in front of us and choosing with our wallet. Velma got torn to shreds, people are cheering on the death of marvel and there's a space opening up for the indie scene. It just takes time for the effects of audience apathy to do away with the problems we're currently seeing.

I wouldn't care if it were just goofy cartoons doing this. But even the radio ads I hear on to way to work have this obnoxious self aware snarkiness that never turns off. I don't pay for cable anymore but I imagine TV ads are the same now

Regain it as an individual and become the kind of person people want to emulate.

I've never been a very charismatic or comedic person in the first place so I was never very ironic in the first place.

Why did you respond without even reading my post? Was there something you didn't get the first time you read it? Give it a few more goes and see if something dawns on you.

            >Don't be ironic.
            >Okay.
I have to wonder what response you were hoping for.

Huh? I said I don't really deal in irony, but I'm not charismatic so no one would want to emulate me. What did I miss?

"Be the change you want to see" isn't really applicable here, since being sincere will never get you as much attention as being ironic with modern English audiences.

I just hope the pendulum swings back. They say millennials can't get enough of this but I was already sick of it 5 years ago.

I really wonder why it has hung around so long because Millennials were also trying to push 'New Sincerity' and it didn't last long. But read/watch Gen X media and the meta-awareness and irony seems to have already been present by that point.

It was always around way before the first millennial was even born, but it was rare and it felt more special when you'd encounter something like that.
When it's everywhere its just tiresome, and makes me feel that the authors tried to make something sincere, but lacked the confidence to actually own it. So they went with the "lmao so ironic this cant happen in reality am I rite *wink* oh here's a reference" as a shield, rather than trying to become a better writer or retool their idea.

As you can see with morons ITT
The gays on Cinemaphile like shit that appeals to nobody
They're no different from the ironic media they complain about
Being afraid at sincere attempts at making something getting rejected by the masses

I think we need to double down and be ironic about irony, meta about meta, until that becomes oversaturated and we end up right back where we started.

You just have to wait for a generation who sees the older folks being ironic 24/7 so they see it as uncool and obnoxious by association. There's no saving millennials. Irony poisoning is fatal.

It's also horrendously put together. One of the worst I've ever seen. But if you have the fanbase you clearly feel you're above putting something cohesive together and while they're not wrong, production is going to be a complete shit show and their fanbase will turn on them because they clearly have absolutely no idea what they're doing.
No real explanation of what the episode plot will be about, no run down of the characters, no explanation on why they need the amount of money they're asking for. Who are the industry veterans you're working with?
How much of the money will go towards animatics, backgrounds, animation roughs, cleanups, vfx, lighting, post production, taxes, etc.?

Dissapointing this drek got funded successfully when there's hundreds of other animation projects out there by passionate people with great ideas that clearly elaborate on what the funds will go towards, that don't get funded and ignored.

The money is probably not coming from the people that would fund those projects you'd like.

What I like or not is subjective and irrelevant. It's the fact that there's really no substance or any thought put into here, except them getting lucky by being semi-viral as some point years ago. While others spend months or even years developing their ideas while nobody gives them any attention.

Unfortunately this is why you've gotta play the youtube game to help your audience find you. I feel the same way towards goodbye volcano high. That game is a complete mess and a total rip-off of thirty bucks. But it still has very positive reviews on steam because the tumblr crowd was able to find it.

Macks is one of the funniest people on Youtube. I still regularly watch those fake documentaries he made, that shit never gets old.

So yeah, I wanna' see more of his stuff.
