Cleaning up Star Command TV-rips

So the cartoon has had a ton of attention recently, but the only mega posted, and these rips which are possibly the only source for the series, are of pretty poor quality.

So I've tried to clean it up a bit. So far I think the test results are not bad all in all.

I could upscale it, but honestly it looks better if I keep it in the SD resolution. At best I could possibly double it to 1280x960 but that's only if it's really something you all want.

Thanks. I know it's far from perfect, but I figure it's better than nothing?

        looks much cleaner.

This is some high-quality cleanup. The only major flaw I can see is that the lines are too dark, which is most noticeable in the green aliens' inner ear lines and the lines on the space-suit emblems.

Otherwise this is damn near perfect.

there is another problem, the backgrounds are meant to have a texture, but due to the cleanup the texture is lost and everything looks smooth

      >the lines are too dark
Yes I had to adjust them to help preserve them in the cleaning process, but I can reduce the line darkening a bit to retain a look closer to the original.

      >the backgrounds are meant to have a texture, but due to the cleanup the texture is lost and everything looks smooth
Right, but with the poor quality it's nearly impossible to retain the textures while also removing the artifacts/noise/blockiness.

I do too, but these rips are painful to watch.

Thanks. I still wish I had a higher quality source, or at least the full series from that CTC broadcast.... but I'm relatively pleased with how this looks for a trial run.

I gotta get some sleep, but I'll resume work on this after work.

What the hell? I am farily certain I saw some high quality rip screen shots posted years ago. Somebody had a better source. You're telling me nobody can find it now?

      >Somebody had a better source. You're telling me nobody can find it now?
I looked before trying to do any work on these rips, but I couldn't find any other source. The only decent source I've seen is the "The Adventure Begins" movie that consisted of the first 3 episodes with Tim Allen instead of Patrick Warburton. That's the only thing from this series that had a VHS and DVD release.

There's also this trailer, but while it's far better than the TV-rips, it has lots of aliasing. https://www.imdb.com/video/vi3187000089/

IF there is a better source, I hope it's posted eventually.

Found one other source (right image), it's from a different broadcast, but somehow it's even worse.

Update, found more but it's just 15 out of the full 62. https://toonhub4u.com/buzz-lightyear-of-star-command-episodes-multi-audio/

Also only some (those with the CTC logo) are substantially better. But of the 15, the only one without that CTC source is "Lost in Time".

Damn shame we'll never get a quality release on D+ or anything else.

Why won't they release it on D+? What's the actual issue? The sex jokes?

      >Why won't they release it on D+? What's the actual issue?
Nobody knows. But then again they still haven't added the Aladdin series to D+ and that was a huge hit.

Are there any old Disney cartoons that are on the D+ and any notable absences? I know Song of the South and Follow Me Boys aren't there for some reason. Do they even add older shows ever? I ain't paying for that

Zorro’s not on there other than a compilation movie of a few episodes, and that to me is the worst one. Arguably the definitive version of such an iconic character, and they don’t put it on their platform.

Jon Lasseter reportedly hated the show and, despite him being removed, that sentiment is probably still held by some of the old guard still at Pixar.

      My thought is
      a) Pixar crew hated it because not muh
      b) Disney wants Lightyear to be the official Buzz Lightyear story so they consider the old show competition to their new idea

        >Disney wants Lightyear to be the official Buzz Lightyear story so they consider the old show competition to their new idea.
Well their idea of "what if buzz lighyear had a movie designed to sell toys" bombed and people are now interested in watching the show that was actually designed to sell more buzz lighyear toys, it's hilarious that when trying to intentionally make a cashgrab just can't stop and add their own "subverting expectations" shit.

        There is the c option:
Disney core doesnt want to work with anything from DTVA, since that a different division. And while yes apart of disney corporate, they would still have to sign away essentially a permit to use said material (corporate shit is weird like that)
        then theres D.
Star Command aired on UPN, a viacom owned network. So Viacom most likely has some degree of rights to the show, and disney doesnt want to cooperate with a rival.

          Anonymous

Personally I think option D is bullshit. Disney had the international rights, I see no way they didn’t keep them in the US as well.

They also aired it on Toon Disney.
I think the copyright for it is complicated. At the moment, if you upload episodes to Youtube, Viacom won't claim them. That's very rare for Viacom, who actually sued Youtube over copyright violations and typically won't let you upload their stuff. Meanwhile, Disney only claims the theme song (claimed by UMG on behalf of Walt Disney technically), but only so they can block it in Russia and Belarus. That started recently with the Ukraine war shit.

i mean digitally enhancing cells that were only broadcasted at 480p with other junk in the feed is the only option we have.
other than being a tad over saturated and the backgrounds that arent geometric looks scuffed, it looks alright.

        >i mean digitally enhancing cells that were only broadcasted at 480p with other junk in the feed is the only option we have.
Not that anon but no, the alternative is not doing that shit and just appreciating them the way they look without having to alter them.
It's the same shit with colorizing old black and white movies and photos. It's a bunch of misplaced effort. There's nothing wrong with things looking old. In fact, it's a cozy aesthetic for some homosexuals.
Personally, I'd rather watch something that looks great in 480p because that's what it was made for than something that looks like dogshit in 1080p.

I'm gonna Devil's Advocate and say the "old" look is the alteration to the original animation, which did not account for it but accepted it. It's not like how video game pixel art took CRT blurring into account to achive desired effects.

For this clean-up, the issue isn't how it looks in 480p since it's not being enlarged. The issue is how poor quality the full series broadcast recordings are.

if you want the first three episodes, which were combined into the video release movie featuring Tim Allen then it's actually on youtube. though idk how far you are in ripping the those episodes, so it's a suggestion at this point:
