The anatomy is bad, but Milo has always had an issue with that, and so have comics in general.

The real issue was tone deaf shame culture: because the dude draws porn (really, European comics that aren't afraid to have sex shown) sometimes, so when he made a pose where you could see her butt that fired up the puritanical wing of the Left. If it had been someone else who drew their porn under a different name there would have been no issue, they tried to hang him with his resume.

That's weird. I remember the criticism being pretty clearly that the cover was self-evidently fap material, with no real context for the artist. The controversy required that the fact that he was primarily a porn artist not be brought up, because that detail was used in later argument to refute the moronic argument of the target fap demographic at the time: you're imagining things, and peter striking similar poses proves there was never any sexual intent.
Obviously he was hired to create the thing his career was based on. All the protests to the contrary were laughably disingenuous.

It must have been Kelly Sue and her comics whisper network kicking it off. I remember there was a big push at the time to make Spiderwoman a woke feminist icon even though the character was not popular at all. Compare this cover to the new DC sweater weather comics coming out now. Where is the shitshow social media protest against those?

They seem to have worked out that including some guys in the fanservice negates most cake-related drama. I've been saying this is the solution for years. It keeps far more people happy than putting everyone in burlap sacks.

That's how the Fairy Tail manga gets away with it and why it's so popular with women despite the high amount of waifu fanservice. Men and women are both coomers and like seeing hot people.

What? No. There was multiple type of critiques leveled at him. Not that the critics cared about consistency. The biggest claim was that it was actually HARMFUL to women, not just about sex.

I love the Liefield ones in particular since the main thing with him is his primary issue is making girls too narrow, in the sense of them often being kind of squashed, but he actually has a stupidly good grasp of high condition anatomy [high end body builders and athletes] at its extreme ends, his actual fricking problem is perspective [he fricks up and does bodyparts at different angles from eachother sometimes] and that he has a shit sense of "timing".

See people like Arnie back when he was Mr. Universe or the like? Their bodies are in extreme condition and might need to be actively in use at any moment, and subconsciously they're aware of that. So the body will do a lot of these little micromovements and transitory actions as a way of doing little "checks" to make sure everything is working right, because is something goes wrong someone like, well again Arnie during his Mr. Universe days could legitimately kill or cripple himself by parts of his body ripping themselves apart if something goes wrong. They're transitory motions usually, little stretches and flexes and so on.

A lot of his "uncomfortable poses" that Liefield does are those movements....only frozen in time. Nobody fricking holds those movements for very long, it's uncomfortable as shit even if you're not a wall of muscle or a lean mean frickmachine, but what he's trying to do, consciously or not, is show those movements in a medium that doesn't fricking move because he's kind of a moron, resulting in all these roided dudes coiling or slinky women cat stretching in every panel when normally said motions would be only for a split second.

are there any good comic artists who convey good movement/anatomy in their poses?

Anatomy's not that hard though they don't teach it anymore in most animation schools and not many people in comics go to proper art school anymore nor do they study the works of those that did like Liefield did as a kid. Liefield does alright for anatomy when you factor in that he basically only draws the 0.0001% high end but his movements are average at best and he does have those perspective problems. I'd say Willaims II is a good bet, his art is gorgeous in general and he's not lacking in ability really in any one area but I'm unsure if he's the best at movement. I'd need to think on it for a good while and probably hunt around just because you don't usually notice when it's done well, just when it's done less than well.

Also, way to miss the actual problems with the art like the wonky perspective and the (admittedly stylistic) choice to give everyone giant legs. The "blank space" behind Artemis and the pose itself does a lot to add dynamism to help sell the door being slammed open

Imagine having been on the internet 20 years ago and watching it become homogenized until it's completely unrecognizable, with all of the sites you frequent slowly disappearing year-after-year until the only thing left that makes you feel any sort of connection to that feeling of wonder and promise the internet held was is Cinemaphile, of all place. Imagine being that person, haha, what a loser.

It's anatomically correct, drawn by one of the world's premier erotic illustrators. I still have no idea why tumblr comicels decided to make this their hill to die on. Comics professionals lost their jobs and were black listed for defending this cover. I will also never forget the string of untalented morons who said this pose was "impossible to do" and then redrew it even worse.

Thing is, Spiderman has actual costume with black shadows obscuring everything. While the woman is just completely naked with some body paint, completely nude for all the world to see with lighting everywhere and zero shadow to hide her nudity. Notice how Spiderman's ass is completely covered by costume with no hint of it being his bare skin

It had been building in female-dominated comic communities like Scans Daily before Tumblr even existed, but Tumblr and Twitter helped it spread like a plague.

That infamous Liefeld pic of Captain America was referenced from a photo of Arnold back in his bodybuilding days, it wouldn't be surprising if Rob did use other bodybuilder pics to inspire poses he drew characters in, the same way Land drew poses from porn and WWE.

The way tumblr is set up allowed people to get isolated in their bubbles and see nothing but people liking their posts with little opposition. As terrible as Twitter is there's the chance that people's arguments could be challenged more than on tumblr

On top of that a lot of the livejournal people migrated to there so it set the tone

I don't get why comics in general have so many armchair anatomy critics. It's cartooning. Their should be some fakery and bullshiting for a better picture. I don't like Rob Liefeld's art, but it's because I don't like his style of linework. But I know more exaggerated artists I like because their rendering and linework serves their art better.

the thesis is that unrealistic portrayals of women leads to unrealistic self image expectations of women that cause them psychological and physical harm, therefore justifying anything, up to and sometimes including violence to stop it.

Similarly , negative depictions of black and brown people also cause harm, and must be banned

This is a belief to these people almost to the point of being a religion..

that they know sales are in the shitter, and the redisigned less sexy outfits sold terrible, and that corporate is VERY likely to go on a cost cutting spree soon.

It must have been Kelly Sue and her comics whisper network kicking it off. Compare this cover to the new DC sweater weather comics coming out now. Where is the shitshow social media protest against those?

This was the suit that came out as a direct result of the Manara b***hing. The run was c-/d+, and sold like garbage.

the outrage about this kinda reminds me of similar shit that happens on Cinemaphile daily
because here's the thing- this drawing is awful. terrible. dogshit art. dogshit anatomy. looks weird, creepy, her neck is snapped at an odd angle, her ass crack is way too deep and cavernous, the whole thing is fricked. hell, it'd work if she was some kinda shapeshifting alien feeder, but she's not, she's meant to have the solid anatomy of a human woman, so it's just offputting.
the problem is people looked at this, and instead of going "haha holy shit that's so bad, let's mock it and meme about it!", they instead wen't "THIS IS A PERSONAL ATTACK AGAINST ME AND MY WOMANHOOD REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
and THAT is why the outrage was stupid

it's no different than what Cinemaphile goes thru daily, whenever a dumb movie or cartoon or comic comes out, something we could happily joke about... we instead choose to be idiots and turn it into moral outrage. and likewise, like those screeching women, we sound just as moronic

I had no particular opinion on Manara but then I read Indian Summer and his style clicked for me. It's not about making individual characters or objects "pretty", it's all in composition and outlines. He can make something that looks like a classical painting with just line drawing. Much of that might've been lost with age, I dunno.

Yep, it’s bad because it’s ugly, not for sociopolitical or dynamic posing reasons. It’s tame by Spider standards, and proportions or anatomy can be way more distorted and still look great.

Because people were smart enough to recognize a canary in a coal mine and that shitting on a basic cover like this would lead to worse shit.

Yep, it’s bad because it’s ugly, not for sociopolitical or dynamic posing reasons. It’s tame by Spider standards, and proportions or anatomy can be way more distorted and still look great.

For fricks sake, her face is the Communion alien with lipstick. It’s just bad, not some intentionally uncanny masterpiece.

I don't agree that it's bad art. It looks much better than what most run of the mill Marvel artists have shat out past 20-30 years.

I suspect most people trying to squeeze in the "yeah censorship is wrong...but it IS bad art!" angle seem to actually think it's fine to censor things if they don't like them and are trying to masquerade as anti-censorship people.

      >we
Frick you. Does the art look a little off, absolutely but doing this whole "both sides bad" routine when the outrage was all about SJWs trying to purge all hints of sexuality from mainstream comics is disingenuous at best. Call it culture war as much as you want, it's an observable phenomena that from 2014 to now certain people have worked very hard to get all the sex out of Marvel.

Milo Manara and J.Scott Cambell styles are ugly as hell. Alan Davis drew great women but he never was a ''sexy'' artist but I always loved how he drew women so I'm bring it up.

Manara shines most in his inkwork. He and Hugo Pratt are so different stylistically but I can see why they'd work together. both do an amazing job of capturing wind and flowing movements on figures.

You should trust this anon as much as you would someone who can't tell the difference between attempt and success. The shit with the Gift Basket is infamous. You can absolutely tell the people trying to get him removed from the hitpiece articles, and his "OUTRAGE" covers.

You know who else had hitpieces in the last year? Otto Schmidt. You know what he got to do after that? character designs for three DC animated movies.

Close enough. Also, the push for conservative female outfits that was a part of going after manara and cho and the like sold like SHIT, and we're moving out of that era now. >, the christgays and PMRC and code era isn't shit either.
The difference is that all of those became major issue that involved heavy lobbying and attempting to make significant strikes at the most important thing- the company's wallet.
My main interest in comics is largely visual, especially pin-up art so I know a lot about who's working and who isn't. I remember when people tried to get Ed Benes off books, or when Sana Takeda was the bane of livejournal. It all doesn't make a dent because there's no actual organization.
My thing about the Cho/Wonder woman thing is that if you don't say the exact circumstances it muddies the real issue- that writers and editors have more power in comics than artists who sell. Maybe Cho defending the Manara cover influenced Rucks to b***h about him- but it wasn't until Rucka b***hed about Cho that they moved him away from the book. the company itself had no issue giving him work because the cancellation attempts didn't do shit, only when one of their precious writers complained did they react.

That's a salient point, but I'm not sure if I buy it wholesale. When that punisher artist was removed for doing veterans charity work, it really wasn't a strike at the bottom line. The politics does make a difference in who gets to work and who doesn't at the big 2.
