It was specific brain damage related to controlling his power, nobody's ever tried to suggest he also had what we normally mean when we talk about brain damage. IIRC Whedon tried to retcon that he wasn't really brain damaged, it was all psychological, but it didn't stick.

Confidence and just doing it are very crucial. Regret is worse than rejection. But you also have to be socially aware as well. If you don't know how to talk to people then it'll be more difficult. I've seen guys confidently talk to and flirt with girls and fail horribly and come off as creepy. But those are extreme cases. You're still going to strike out a lot but it's the times you succeed that makes it all worth it.
Earnestness counts as well. A guy stumbling with words but sounding sincere will have a better reception than a smooth talker who is just going to hit on someone else when rejected.
Yes. Every movie. tv, magazine, and talking head on youtube will try and convince you that it's hard and you need fancy clothes, speaking classes, confidence workshops or the right deodorant or some shit but that's all secondary. If you enjoy spending time with someone or want to try spending time with someone all you need to do is show your interest and ask. If the feeling is mutual they'll respond positively. If they don't then don't take it personally and move on. There could be a million reasons they say no and they may have nothing to even do with you. So pat yourself on the back for trying and go try again.
Sure it helps if you look decent, can hold a conversation and don't stink. But that's basic shit you should have covered if you're going out into the world. Trim your facial hair, have a decent haircut and wear something flattering if you want. But any fat slob weeb can find a fat slob weebette to watch naruto with together.
