Animation itself is very clunky but it'd be cool to see this 90's artstyle make a comeback. Especially in the west where anime mostly went ignored in that decade.
I was told by the creators most of the animation is either old and being reanimated, or thrown together to meet the trailer deadline. Should be better by the end, I hope.
The sequence that starts at 1:04 has too many expressive frames, making this weird uncanny valley effect. less human emotive frames would emulate the retro anime style better.
I can't shake the feeling these guys just downloaded a bunch of Obari's anime and traced whatever they needed. But more power to them, copy from the best and all that.
But on the topic of western-made anime, especially a crowdfunded one, my biggest reservation is that there are Japanese animators doing crowdfunding. Why wouldn't I donate to them instead? Crowdfunding animation is always a bit of a gamble, and I'd rather my money go to someone with proven ability and track record.
Design-wise it looks fine, but they're clearly overdoing it with the surface highlights. Not even Madhouse-quality stuff such as "Ninja Scroll" or "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" had these many per frame. They end up being distracting and tiresome to look at, regardless of the limited animation.
It's ok to include them in areas such as the lips (and nipples), but unless the skin of a character is meant to appear wet or oiled up, it shouldn't really look all that shiny.
I mean Ideally if you're gonna copy his style you go for the full package so hopefully it's just for the trailer/pitch. I don't expect miracles out of a pet project though.
I think it looks fine, but I've not really heard about any progress they've made since I first heard about the project. It's kind of neat that they're putting it together and have the style design down so well, but nothing I've seen or heard about the project is really all that interesting.
"Western made anime indie production" is really the only thing they have going for them, and the only thing of note about the project right now.
>year old video
>only 1000 views
Wow those guys mustve fricked up their marketing if thats all they could reach.
Successfully funded their kickstarter.
Got an interview in a recent anime magazine. It's no Pomni, though.
$50k is not nearly enough for a proper animated movie. Barely for a 5 minute short.
It's to cover a 45 minute OVA that will get shopped around to studios.
>western made anime
That's an oxymoron.
/a will not support any anime not made in Japan.
>anime not made in Japan
That's not a thing.
Obari as ...what?
Famous animator from Japan. Made the Fatal Fury and Angel Blade anime.
I was trying to make a joke on the phrase Obaris as Frick
I almost can see her pusy
If these is going full Obari you'll be seeing that and more
Their is a planned girl on girl sex scene, and a few shower scenes. Nothing hardcore shown.
Hot

Looking forward to it if true. Cause right now it reminds me a bit of Kappa Mikey in some scenes. Definitely needs more hand drawn inbetweens

The same reason people crowdfunded Don Bluths animated project. To try to resurrect a style of animation that has fallen out of favour.
At least for me it looks interesting... It would be great if Masami Obari saw this and decided to help on the project
Just as he may not end up liking the project and do nothing
But in case the former happens, I'm pretty sure he'll update the designs so they don't look so nineties
He has been posting on his twitter recrntly regretting dropping this style.
Really?

As much as I love the Obari style, the animation is janky as frick.
