Based on its creator leaving over a year before its premiere, I believe the show had quite the troubled production and, by the time it was ready to air, the higher ups had already written off any potential for the show, ended production on a cliffhanger, and sent the show to be quickly burned off.
I've watched the show and, disregarding the visuals, it does have broad strokes similarities to Futurama (down on their luck human(s) find themself/themselves suddenly in a futuristic environment where they're given the ability to start life over, to an extent). Also, I think Elliott is, in some ways, better than the last season or two of Gumball (lacking the overuse of meta humor, wacky faces, and cynicism that Gumball went through as it drew to a close).
Gumball animators should stay as only Gumball animators.
