The films biggest problem is the dialogue which completely undermines whatever tension is attempted, the direction for the actors is also a little off as times but I feel like if the dialogue wasn't so quippy and goofy maybe the cast and Jeunet would have gone about it differently.

Why change perfection?
Alien is horror, aliens is action horror, aliens 3 is avant garde bullshit horror and resurrection is for the kids ha ha funny horror like godzilla
A big problem is that a lot of the characters feel underdeveloped
I love the movie. I do. I love everything
But the newborn is moronic and disgusting
I literally skip the ending. I never watch the newborn.
If they wanted the idea of alien Hunan hybrids they needed to have newborns from the beginning.
Pink skin aliens. Xenomorphs with white skin.
Human xenomorph should have looked like this.
From the beginning.
>But the newborn is moronic and disgusting
Not disgusting enough. The original model had a hermaphroditic image of benis in bagina, which filtered even the director.
We were robbed the last 1% of true kino.
Is that Tuco Salamanca
Yupp, Raymond Cruz
And it has Warren from from CSI.
no, it's Domingo Chavez
*Chuey
>Raymond Cruz has played a cartel shitbag AND the leader of Rainbow Six
Truly the full spectrum of latin casting
winune hair 2 short
No the whole movie was dumb
retread soup of Alien and Aliens except with no likable characters
Resurrection looks and sounds great to this day, good scifi action-horror but bad Alien movie
I only saw DC but I thought it was pretty good despite being goofy at times.
The Directors cut is better for sure, it gives the captain ane DiStephano another scene each which helps their characters not feel as flat
Alien Resurrection doesn't need salvaging, it's a good movie in its own right, with a style that's unorthodox for the series, but that's a good, entertaining package on its own. It's a cinematic experience.
If you wanna salvage something, go look at Covenant instead, it's much more of a mess.
i enjoy joss whedon's dialogue.
but, then again, I'm white, so therefore my opinion matters.
Resurrection has god tier aesthetic and set design
It's the first alien film i saw, didn't think it was that bad. I heard that whedon was b***hing that while they followed his script, they did it wrong anyway, which seems like a copout to me. The death of the newborn was and is really disgusting.
Yeah a problem for me with the film is that its going more for gross out than horror, which I do not care for
Well Whedon is a little b***h so doesn't surprise me that he'd blame it on others and not his hacky one-note character writing.
Resurrection is a collection of really great scenes and ideas that doesn't work out to being a particularly good movie. I'd say editing killed it, but this isn't like 3 where there's several versions to compare what could've been.
I think Resurrection is the best example of a film that has tons of great elements but somehow it just falls apart and fails to make a good movie. Its almost impressive
A rewrite plus a different director, someone who would maintain the lived-in aesthetic of the first three films.
I've heard Lynch was considered but said no
He wouldn't have been good, either. You need more down-to-earth directors making these movies. Alien and Aliens were great because the worlds and characters they constructed felt real. Alien 3 was bad for different reasons, but Resurrection is just pure Hollywoodism with wisecracking idiot characters and dumb-looking action sequences.
In 1997 they should have brought back either Scott or Cameron to do a retcon of Alien 3 while the cast was still young enough to pull the characters off.
>In 1997 they should have brought back either Scott or Cameron
No. Scott has shown he's an idiot with no good ideas to continue the series. And Cameron had already finished his movie. And it had a happy, completw ending. They all got back to Earth and things worked out. There was nothing ambigious that would lead to an Alien 3. They should have pulled a Predator 2 where they time and location skipped to somewhere else much later on and used a conpletely different protagonist. Would have been the perfect time for a cyberpunk dark future city, space colony, or space station
The poor man's Stephen King? Thankfully he passed.
I didn't even know he was sick.
I dont think thats true
Yes. If not for the Joss Whedon quips and cartoonish diversity casting, this movie could have been great.
There is nothing cartoonish about the cast
they are all literal fosters home for imaginary friends cartoons
The character writing is cartoonish but the cast is great, they're all good actors who fir for their roles
ron perlman is a caricature of a human
He's not a man he's a tibetan mastiff trained by Hollywood specialists.
Ron Perlman and Michael Wincott. How long have you been a moron
>salvaged
You don't need to salvage perfection.
Only good part
It's a fun movie, more fun than Alien 3 that's for sure
Aliens 4 just needs that stupid human alien cut out, the rest is great.
Alien 3 is awesome too.
OP sucks dicks.
The idea of a hybrid was pretty good continuation of the xenomorph idea and the company doing horrible things
But it looked like literal dog shit
Nah, the Newborn was a decent idea, and I stand by that its the dialogue thats the main problem.
Hate to say it but that's from Whedon when he was actually good and hadn't turned into a parody of himself. It came out around the time he did drafts for Toy Story, Speed and right around the time Buffy started airing. The whole concept of the movie is fundamentally flawed. You can't fix it unless you cut Sigourney out entirely. Cause the whole idea of the movie is fricking stupid. And that wasn't a Whedon thing, that was a mandate from the producers
>Almost entire cast are murderous, Gee I hope they get out okay.
Not just murderous, they trafficked in hijacked cryosleep humans for experiments. They knew that whatever shit the corporation was doing must be bad, because otherwise they wouldn't need to employ deep-space slaver to bring them off-the-books bodies.
They're bad even for space-pirates.
This, only Call, Ripley, DiStephano and that one trafficking victim that woke up were even remotely sympathetic, and half of those characters got zero development
I didn't even know who you meant with DiStephano, that's how weak the character is.
They could have had the space-pirates be smugglers who realise they're dealing in human cargo instead of contraband drugs or some shit, and then immediately turn against the scientists on pure "they're humans, doc!" principles, and that causes shit to turn south. They'd be bad people smuggling illegal stuff, but they wouldn't be some of the worst people in the galaxy.
Thats a way better idea, it would have also given the pirates some drive to do anything at all before the xenos break losse, as it is in the movie now they just randomly decide to stick around on the military shit (with the general's blessing for some reason) to fart around and come across Ripley as she plays basketball.
That basketball game was crucial for the plot though! How else could they have established that Ripley's superhuman? It'd be impossible!
Of course, how silly of me, there is no other way to depict it, Catwoman proved that a few years later!
This whole movie was moronic for reasons like that.
>>top secret experiment
>>hey, lets let the untrustworthy pirates mingle with our experiment. Its not like it's a big ship that we could've kept every separated.
So dumb, feels like the script was a first draft sometimes
The protagonists should've been the humans that woke up early and realized they were being used for this horrible experiment and tried to escape both the army and the aliens.
I actually thought the robot part of the plot sounded the most interesting. They should have taken the thing in an entirely new direction by getting rid of Ridley and focusing entirely on Winona infiltrating the base and liberating the research subjects. The research subjects only find out she's not human later on, and then it becomes a whole "the soulless automaton betrayed its maker and saved us while our brethren experimented on us..." thing where the survivors join the robot revolution. Overall the plot would be as you describe, though. It's just that Winona's character is the one waking them.
considering how unlikable they made Ripley anyway, why not.
Isn't the xeno already a human hybrid? I mean when you start introducing shit like a dog alien that looks like a mix between a dog and an alien then the "default" xeno is clearly just a mix of human and xeno
Thats a good point
The xenomorph isn't a Earth-engineered hybrid like the humalien
one of the films i saw in theaters as a kid with my father... if i can remember all the others
>king kong (the bug scene seemed to traumatize the audience)
>godzilla (hiding in new york)
>stargate (was so young i can barely remember anything)
Could have been salvaged by having Winona in a wet t-shirt for the second half. Two things happened behind the scenes that messed it up tbough - Studio went really far down the production path with Danny Boyle, before bailing and Jeunet had some sort of professional falling out with Caro and the studio wouldn't let him have input into the script. The biggest flaw, like three, is that they couldn't find a narrative reason for why another Sigourney starring film should exist at all.
whedon's scripted ending would have been the bestest ending tbh
>Whedon’s scripted ending didn’t just conclude in Paris, but it featured a massive fight against a giant Newborn within Paris’ junkyard. The Newborn kills Destephano and bites Call, with her metallic blood leaving a major impact on the Newborn. As Ripley fights off the Newborn, Call and Johner are able to operate a magnetic crane and grab ahold of the Newborn because of the amount of Call's metallic blood that it's consumed. They toss the Newborn into a trash compactor and, when it still survives, Ripley spears it through the head, finally killing it. The survivors contemplate their future, like what is shown in the Special Edition's alternate ending.
I think the moment you resort to resurrection/cloning tropes to make a sequel "recovering" a deceased character your show/film can't be taken seriously anymore. You wanted the highest shock value and you ruined afterwards by nullifying it.
Also the atmosphere was all wrong.
The only salvageable part is the core concept which is WY experimenting on aliens and everything going wrong. If that was done seriously instead of so goofy it would've been awesome.
>what if ripley returned from the dead but she was... le stonecold bad ass? *teleports behind you*
frick outta here
>so this is earth huh?
>this is earth
she got 11 mil for this movie
Sure it could have been salvaged. Just throw away the whole "Ripley is brought back as a soulless clone" and instead focus on the android who's taken part in a slave revolt. Tie it into Bladerunner where the synthoids joined the replicants in their fight for human rights. The Company didn't like having their merchandise demand a paycheck and so uses them to test the capabilities of their xenomorph weapon, using replicants as incubators and seeing how easily the synths can be taken out with them.
They should have adapted William Gibson's Alien3 script. Space commies fighting over space with the corporations is just what the universe needed.
Alien Resurrection is kino and I'm tired of pretending it isn't.
Favorite character?
Yeah it's my favourite too. The idea of them experimenting on dozens of xenos and they manage to escape is so kino
When I grew up Alien Resurrection aired on tv like once every six months at the least, while I only saw Alien air ONCE as part of a marathon and Alien 2 maybe got an airing every three years. I hate it so much. It's not even a case of it being an inferior sequel, like with how Jaws never aired but Jaws 2 and 3 aired every summer, it's like if only Jaws 4 aired. I was an adult before I ever saw Aliens 3 and having grown up with A:R I just don't see how anyone can hate the good cut of A3.
I like both cuts of Alien 3
it's not a good movie
