I mean, it literally can't do worse than the movie

You need perfect writing, perfect acting (from young actors at that), perfect sets, perfect costumes, perfect martial arts, perfect digital effects, perfect practical effects, perfect fake animals, etc.

I don't think it's financially possible for this to be a good adaptation.

I'm unironically thinking this adaptation will blow the socks off the fandom, with the exception of a few cartoon loyalist holdouts who will be forever bitter about the success of the live action and ostracize themselves from the rest of the fandom as a result.

Even if it is good it will still be unnecessary and inferior.

Unnecessary is the word I'd use too.

I really don't feel like the story of the original cartoon needs to be done over again in live action, be it a movie or episodes.

The cartoon is the muse, it's what the live action needs to aspire to be like. If it can at least aspire to be like the cartoon, pull off some of the same story beats, make you love the Gaang's dynamic, and show off some cool cgi animals/settings/bending then it'll be good enough to watch.

the tricky part is making a live action adaptation WORTH it. from the trailer, it actually looks pretty good, and automatically better than the movie because they seem to have gotten the bending and bending effects right. however, what we seem to see are a bunch of scenes recreated almost exactly like the show. why are we watching the live action adaptation? for the novelty of live action? to make it worth it, you have to do things at least a little bit differently. obviously you need to hit the same core plot points and character growth/moments, but something that makes the one piece adaptation so successful (and kenshin 2012) is that they do things a little bit differently from the original. it gives long time fans a reason to watch. it gives them new things to experience and be surprised by, and/or a way to watch familiar events unfold in a different way. its incredibly risky, because whatever new/altered content they make needs to be just as good as the original stuff.

In the trailer Zhao appears to be the one attacking Kyoshi Island for some reason. That’s trouble with adding new things in an adaptation… will what they add be good or bad additions? Because I’m not sure if I like Zhao stealing Zuko’s thunder so soon. Unless for some reason it makes sense for Zhao to be the one to attack it: Like if he kills people there, which would not be good for Zuko to be killing people and making his redemption later less deserved.

i can see it being fitting as another attempt of zhao to butt in and push zuko aside, or trying to snake the avatar capture from zuko or something. or some way of putting on screen that zhao is a cruel and honorless dick. the series is only 8 episodes, and will presumably cover all of season 1 since it ends at the north pole. how much will they cover? how much will they cut? maybe they'll cut some other zhao stuff, so they needed a way to better establish the character, so his downfall at the north has proper build-up and impact. zuko stays pretty consistent through every early event, so cutting him from one doesnt really change much or affect his development.

True, I just hope they’re only cutting him from one scene. Hopefully he’ll still get his hands on Katara’s necklace and give that to June so he can track Aang down. Now that I think of it, only eight episodes, it would be a little weird if it was always Zuko being the instigator, especially when Zhao will be dead soon anyway. Wan Shi Tong is also in so we’ll get to see Zhao going to him for info on the Moon Spirit. Really seems packed with content. No idea how they do it all in 8 hours.

actually, season 1 of the show is 20 episodes, at about 23 minutes each. thats 7.66 hours. they COULD realistically do 1:1 and cover everything, but that would also follow the same pacing as a 23 minute show.

I'm thinking it will either succeed as a teen drama/worldbuilding show, OR as a kungfu action show. I'm placing my bet, the bending will be bad.

It at least looks better than the movie, things actually look like what they are based off of.
    Also Momo isn't cursed.

So how much is it going to follow the cartoon and how much is it going to diverge into its own thing?
