Fanservice is precisely the reason why the genre has been going downhill for the past two decades now: it always distracts from the plot, takes up precious screentime that could be used for character development and action, and always brings in the worst types of audiences (see WFM, Geass, Gurren, etc.).
Not to mention, it seems pointless in mecha to begin with: you already have a marketing and merchandise approach with the freakin' robots themselves - why the hell would you only saturate it further by baiting the pedo/hotglue figure audience, as well? Gundam doesn't feel the need to do this, even with something like WFM, the most figs we got were of the two main girls and that was it. The rest (like the Lunamaria figs from SEED or the Sumeragi GK for 00) have been secondary merchandise for people who treat Gundam as any FotM show of the year, who don't care about the genre and its main drawing point.
I mean, FFS, it's gotten to the point that what were mecha-focused titles have been slowly and gradually shifting their focus more and more to the waifugay crowd. Perfect example of this is SRW, where before, the female pilots would be a minority, relegated to the ones from guest series - but now make up more than half of the OG casts, and then shove these badly-animated unnecessary bounce cut-ins into your face for both the OG female pilots and the guest series characters.
And just to add more to this: notice how all the series with excessive fanservice, or that appeal to these types of crowds in some way or another, are usually the ones with the worst discussions in this board. Say what you will about Gundam shitposting, but at least those threads don't have the exact same two or three shitty Godannar ass and bounce gifs, or delusional schizo yurigay posting like in WFM threads, or the same shitty bounce gifs and cut-ins of SRW that have been posted for the last twenty years.

Trying to chase a completely different audience isn't going to save mecha. What's going to save mecha is good execution, namely 1. good audiovisuals (this is an audio visual medium, duh), and 2. likeable characters. Mecha anime over the past decade have failed to grasp those two fundamentals which is why nobody is really enjoying modern mecha anime.
