Why did people call this the dark age? It's pretty soulful art for something so minimalistic.
I could be wrong, but isn't the 'dark age' supposed to refer to the large amount of really cheaply made animation being made at the time, and not that everything was equally cheap.
It refers to the closing of large animation studios in the 60s and the overall cheapening of animation as a result of it, with less of a focus on feature-length works. Just because the average cheapened doesn't mean it was all bad, though.

Even Disney suffered during this period, although that was mostly from the old age and then death of Walt.

I'm not sure how long manufacturing stayed, but the first Barbie and her clothes were made in Japan in 1959, so presumably Mattel had some operation roots there.
Outsourcing is why they were able to sell Barbie at 3 bucks back then.

You realize Sunbow didn't handle the animation, right? They outsourced to Toei, which has been around since the 40s. Animation outsourcing has been happening since the 60s.
Yeah Sunbow was more of a middle guy between Japan and the US still is kind of far fetch to assume a 1 minute commercial from the 70s would be outsourced to Japan specially back in the 70s when there where still a good number of animator in the USA.
Most "toy animation outsourced to Japan" was handled by Sunbow entertainment which was created in the 80s but this commercial is from the 70s.
Outsourcing animation wasn't unheard of back then but, from what I understand, wasn't really common either until after the animation strike of 1982.
A thirty second spot like that was most likely done by some local studio. Especially since they got June Foray to do the voice work.

Well I give up, my search lead me to a bunch of broken links and databases that require you to either pay in advance before browsing or be member of an university to access. Some retro commercial places have old stuff but couldn't find anything similar to the ad. Is kind of weird if you think about it, most ads are about the product itself, they one is for a promotional membership.
