>countless artists desperately try and fail to get a chance to tell their stories

>countless artists desperately try and fail to get a chance to tell their stories

>Peter Sohn gets to fumble his way through two incompletely made barely profitable movies and will probably get a 3rd

Why is Hollywood and the animation industry like this? This man clearly has limited storytelling talent and yet keeps getting opportunities actually talented people would do anything for

NTA but who knows what goes on at Pixar really.

Good Dinosaur was just a clusterfrick all around where his job was to salvage the pieces of a movie from the former director. Not entirely his fault.
      Elemental is all him though.

Also this. Even if I don't think it's a great movie, I at least feel some sort of connection to the Pixar I remember because Sohn was there. Even if it was something like suggesting a joke or commenting on art direction, he contributed in a small way to all the movies we love. Better than somebody just joining Pixar and treating it like a work-for-hire gig where they don't have any connections to past studio movies.

I don't think anyone is just brought on from outside to direct Pixar movies, unless you're Brad Bird and you have a good relation to the rest of the higher ups.

A good percentage of the writers for their movies are not even Pixar employees. But yeah, I was more referring to employees in general than just directors.

Pixar is a company where the combined talents of their staff REALLY matters. It's how their identity was crafted. You have someone like Bird who's more of an auteur that can bring his vision anywhere, but a lot of the staff are key players for specific positions. Angus Maclane was like their best visual storyboarder for creating action shots so it made sense on paper for him to direct Lightyear, but he was also tasked with the story and that was not something he was prepared for. Sohn is like a glue guy that offers ideas here and there. It's why a lot of his gags make it in to movies and he has a good character voice for playing bit parts. Hi likes cute shit and warm moments. But when he too was given writing/directing duties for Elemental I guess he felt he needed to tell something more "important" so the movie has a really loose allegorical angle that doesn't even make sense in its own world. The movie only work if you ignore the mechanics and focus on the character drama alone, but even then it's sloppy.

His parents were immigrants from Korea. Fun fact: This scene in Elemental is based on his grandmother on her deathbed telling him to marry a Korean.

No his parents are Korean immigrants, Elemental is his self insert autobiography.
I dunno why but Pixar is obsessed with this loser. Russell from Up is also based on him.

He also gets neat little voice acting roles. He was in Ratatouille and Spiderverse. He must be a really friendly guy who people in the industry love.
