avatar making the money it did, especially the sequel, is still absolutely baffling to me, I just can't get my head around it, I don't know anyone that's a genuine fan of it (abatap doesn't count) as a franchise the same way people talk about star wars or the mcu, cameron will just somehow not be denied his billions and it makes no sense.

        Anonymous

        >as a franchise the same way people talk about star wars or the mcu
Why do you have to be a "franchise" fan to go see a film at the cinema and go home? It's a success because it is exactly that, a visually engrossing blockbuster you can have a good time watching and then go home. You can also see it again for a nice thrillride, or take others to it. It doesn't mean you need to fill your home with Avatar Funko Pops and wear Avatar t-shirts all the time. You can watch a film, and leave it at that.

It’s because avatar isn’t a franchise or setting you’re a fan of, it’s an audiovisual experience that comes around once every 9 years at this rate. It’s like if a certain ride at Disneyland or six flags was only open for 4 months every 6 years, except you can somehow ride it in every state in the country. So everybody goes and rides the damn thing all at once to not miss out and then promptly goes back to not caring about it once they can’t ride it anymore.

        Anonymous

It's because it's not a franchise that it was so successful. You don't have to be a "fan", anyone can go see it and enjoy the visuals and audio and old fashioned adventure story.

I'm not claiming that either are the most popular things of all times. I just found it funny how the roles are reversing over time. Star Wars upon its release immediately overshadowed Dune, which it borrows in many ways quite heavily from, and entrenched itself in pop culture with the broadest possible mainstream appeal. While Dune was always sort of popular, but mainly on the radar of the "weird" spectrum of society.

You don't think they could have made a blockbuster movie trilogy out of Dune, two spin-off series and its own fashion line instead of exactly one early Westwood video game classic if the books had had a tiny bit more mainstream appeal?

Because it came out during COVID, during the day and date theater and Max release period, and while being well received and overall a success particularly at the Oscars, it more built up a following from its quality and more timeless kind of story in the next three years. Dune Part 2 is also more generally action heavy without the need for setup, albeit much darker than the first film, and marketing made for an exciting and visually impressive film that stood out from a deluge of shallow and ugly fake looking blockbusters in the past several years, so the hype was much higher. It also has a cast of current stars who are only bigger names since the first half.

Films don't have to be instant megahits to become popular and well liked.

Dune isn't anywhere near as popular as Star Wars.
DUNCtards right now are trying to pretend that a 500M box office (which is massively bolstered by extra expensive overlength IMAX screenings by the way) somehow makes it a cultural phenomenon. But the only Star Wars that's done worse than it is fricking Solo.

It got beaten by Kung Fu Panda 4 two weeks in a row at the box office now. Next weekend, another Godzilla/Kong flick releases, and that franchise handily beat DUNC1 back in 2021.

DUNCtards celebrate an upcoming streaming series that is 100% based on Brian Herbert's shitty fanfiction. And they see nothing wrong with that. This is the kind of "fanbase" Villeneuve has cultivated.
