Whichever version of Faust you've read (Marlowe or Goethe), the film in question is far from being an adaptation of that. It takes some aspects from both, but being what it is (a very simple visually told, because silent, story) it cannot match either dramatic work. Instead, it's a spin of its own on the folk legend.
