I think in a lot of ways it's even simpler than that. The writing is competent. The actions of the characters makes sense. The title character isn't the butt of the joke and talked down to the entire time like in every Disney product.
Black catwoman isn't even a new thing. Eartha Kitt played her in the adam west show. Catwoman in Year One is Falcone's mixed race daughter just like in the movie
