Who is the realistic alternative? Talia went full villain and none of the normie girls ever stick.
Her status as a criminal offers spice and drama to the relationship but she's not evil like Talia, so there's potential that she and Bruce can work it out.
When it's written well, Selina serves as an excellent foil for Bruce. Bruce is someone who refuses to live his life because he feels he doesn't deserve one, Selina is someone who lives to enjoy life at all costs. She's Catwoman because she loves it.
Part of the reason even I didn't like King's take was that he instead went with this "we're both just the right kind of fricked up..." with the stilted speech and awful pet names when part of the fun of the pairing is Bruce being this awkward brute and Selina being fully socialized and somewhat capable of being "normal."
Tom King ruined this pairing for him. I still think it's funny how Talia, Ra's, and all the pulpy goodness of the League of Assassins is a firmly entrenched part of the Batman Mythos thanks to Damian functioning as an anchor baby that keeps them around.
Only if Bat fricks Cat into submission and she stops being a criminal. Any interpretation where she continues to be a crook makes Batman look like a gigantic hypocrite.

i've given up caring about bruce/selina and peter/mj as they will never be allowed to be happy.
Tom King ruined that pairing for at least a generation. Until writers forget "Bat/Cat", I never want to see the two of them in the same page again.
