I thought the Rhinestone Eyes storyboard made it pretty clear that the Boogieman was the one he made the deal with. Though we never really see how it's resolved.
Money. That's why the very next album was a glorified Converse ad (as well as being random shit that was recorded over a month during the Plastic Beach) and then nothing for the longest time.
>Maybe its just the white eyes but i abhor the new design
It's pretty much confirmed when his eyes are white he's calm, happy and not anxious. If his eyes are black something is wrong, or his head has just been shaken too much and they're filled with blood. That's just the visual storytelling they're going with now
Would argue with you about that. Noodle should not look so....used considering her appearance in the official art from the Rhinestone eyes video. Also these speculations about her drug abuse are only speculation cause of all of the cast she was the only one who never fell into depression.

>doesn't look like a 20-something
Well she's 31 so yeah.
I'll ask the big question here, Will Warner try to use the characters after Damon or Jamie die? They can't possibly make music anymore if that happens. What happens when 2d reaches 71 since they age in real time? Will he still be dancing in short shorts or something?
Depends on if there's a reasonable response to their deaths merchandisewise.
I honestly have no idea how big a deal Gorillaz really is. I personally like them, I've met maybe two other people in the wild that do....but I'm also a weird shut in so....
>Why does Noodle seem to age quicker than everybody?
She joined the band at ten and it's been twenty years. Combine that with the unhealthy lifestyle typical of musicians and it's no wonder she looks the way she does. My problem is that Jamie is really inconsistent when it comes to portraying just how old Noodle is. Sometimes she looks like a taller version of her Phase 2 self, while other times she's got wrinkles for days.
This. It's not her size, but the oversaturation of wrinkles which might make her more expressive, but made her look 2decades older than she should look considering Asian women aging.

Personally, I don't mind the wrinkles, as they give her a sense of maturity that I find very attractive. However, there ought to be a limit, at least at this point, considering the band members age in real time. Don't want her crossing over into granny territory just yet.
Gorillaz died when it turned away from being a critique on fake over produced music and False Icons to Albarn's side pet project. Sure, some of the music is still good, but we have lost the unifying aesthetic of the project.
Like, everything had an in universe reason for the songs and a subtle meta commentary. Like the song "Punk" from the first album is apparently Murdoc annoying 2D to the point where he belched out that song before smashing some of the studio equipment.
Plastic Beach took too long to record, Parlophone pushed it out, was released in a somewhat unfinished state
Then the tour and videos cost too much money and the band made virtually nothing on the album or anything associated with it
The band breaks up temporarily, Simon Tong leaves, and Damon is put off doing anything overly ambitious on the storyline front again
End result is Damon and Jamie basically don't collaborate anymore. They each put in their work separately and hope it matches up okay. Jamie does direct the videos after he gets the songs but that's kind of the extent of it
Doesn't help they also got a bit caught up in the political shitstorm over Trump, even if they were kind enough to not make every song about the guy, but that definitely soured a lot of people because it was just the usual "reee, we don't like this political figure" crap as usual
The thing that I can't wrap my head around is that I'm fine with stuff like calling out George Bush in Dirty Harry, but I don't like the stuff on Humanz about Trump. It's not the fact I like Trump, because I honestly don't, but for some reason the bars about him rubbed me the wrong way.
That's because making jokes or making jabs about the president has changed due to the time periods
Back in the 2000's and older, not many made jokes about the current presidents and the information was a lot slower
Now a days, memes and jokes about presidents of the 2010's comes fast and is told by everyone
If trump was president back in the 2000's, we'd be laughing at the jokes due to them being able to be over saturated
That's because making jokes or making jabs about the president has changed due to the time periods

Well for one, Dirty Harry was just the one lyric, and the Demon Days album was about more than just Bush and his shenanigans. Meanwhile, Humanz had a lot of references to Trump that were cut out, and just generally felt like the usual "oh no, we're doomed!" crap that people were spouting during his term. That shit got old even before the album's release because it said nothing that hadn't already been heard before
It's a matter of saturation, I think. DD came out in, what was it? '04 I think? That was sort of right before those last 2-3 years of W's presidency where the riffing on him was just fricking *everywhere* - every sitcom, every talk show, every late night show, every trashy political song, etc. and it just got fricking tiring and fricking old. Trump bashing was already oversaturated before the election even finished, so even if you didn't like the guy, seeing the fricking entire album being hyped entirely off of being their big 'frick you' to Trump was just like making people audibly groan and roll their eyes.
I'd say in general the riffing was also a lot less mean-spirited when DD came out.
When he took a jab at Bush, it was a direct response to his policy regarding the middle eastern oil wars. It's possible to criticize Trump's policies without coming across as virtue signalling, being hysterical, and/or jumping on the media/establishment hate bandwagon, but Damon did exactly those and so did a ton of other people at the time.
There has been a marked difference in seething about politicians as time went on. The Bush-era criticism was sometimes but not always out of control. Bush himself, as time has proven, is pretty fricking moderate; and half of the shit thrown at him was undeserved (but, at the same time, a lot of it was). However, almost all of the anti-establishment music from this time was great. Green Day in particular was a standout, and all of their music is timeless. But when you got to Trump, all of it fell apart and became completely incoherent. It's funny, because Green Day's '21st Century Breakdown' is probably one of the best anti-Trump era albums out there based on themes and content, and it was made under the Obama administration.
The real problem is liberals create their own demon and pretend every single GOP president fits the mold of "evil theocratic warmongering fascist", when in reality very few check every box. Bush, for example, had the evangelical angle. Okay, so maybe theocrat fits, even if it is inaccurate. But Trump? No way, there's nothing evangelical about him. But they claim he wants a theocracy anyway.
Another issue is Humanz was basically Albarn collaborating with all the artists his daughter likes in an attempt to be cool, regardless of whether or not they were good choices.
>Ace was unable to speak as a member of Gorillaz since the process of getting approval from Cartoon Network for dialogue from the character was very costly and went over the band's budget. The music video for "Tranz" was originally going to have an introduction scene where Ace would've had a conversation with 2-D, but the process of getting Cartoon Network to approve the script would have been so costly that in the end, they would not have had the budget required to get Ace's voice actor (Jeff Bennett) to play the role of the character, so the scene was scrapped.
Shame. It was a fun little experiment and I wish they could have done more.
>Was David trying to make 2D into a closet transexual?
Actually rent free.
Its meant to be a funny way of spelling "trance" you dingbat. Its about reliance on outside forces to be happy, most likely drugs, and the self loathing that comes with that, and how its really hard for people who don't go through that to understand it and relate to it.
Why so aggressive? No, not "rend free," that's just the impression the vocals gave combined with the colors on the album cover. Even besides Damon making it very clear he's an "ally" to that sort of thing, it's an understandable interpretation. You know about how art can be interpreted, right? Ever heard of it?
Qu8ality Animation is very expensive to make like unless you band is constantly platinum or the like your not going to be able to pull it off. Also like
Plastic Beach took too long to record, Parlophone pushed it out, was released in a somewhat unfinished state
Then the tour and videos cost too much money and the band made virtually nothing on the album or anything associated with it
The band breaks up temporarily, Simon Tong leaves, and Damon is put off doing anything overly ambitious on the storyline front again

said Plastic Beach made them go broke so bad that the project never fully recovered.
Add in the constant attempts to make an actual TV show the keep getting sunk we are looking at a cool idea past its prime.
Plastic Beach is probably a black mark that'll be held over their heads forever. Their eyes were really bigger than their stomachs on that one, and they're just too weird to go over budget like that.

I haven't been keeping up, how big is their recent push?
I'm just under the impression that every phase post-Plastic Beach has been a lot more fiscally conservative than before. In the side-media aspect atleast, like there's no massive car chase guest starring Bruce Willis, or cool physical model plastic b***h, cool online hub that they forget about for a year after telling us they'd be ready AROUND FRICKING APRILISH! Just nice reasonable music videos with some relatively simple animation, and Jack Black. Or literally just GTA footage with Beck in PiP. Is that ARG app still around even?

You're right that it is more fiscally conservative, but the internet itself has changed. We've gone from "everybody has their own website, including bands" to "eh, just throw something up on twitter and instagram and call it a day". It does suck and it is less ambitious, but my point remains someone is funding them. They're not blacklisted, this is just how things are now.
For another off-topic tangent comparison, consider how television has changed. I remember when the Sci-Fi channel had three new episodes for three different series every week for several months straight each year; and now Disney+ - the streaming service for one of the largest media companies in the world valued more than some countries - drip feeds new content with one new show per week. Just one per week. It's steadier content, but far less ambitious and with far less variety. There's very little to talk about, when compared to "oh let's talk about everything that aired on Friday last week". This is how things are now. The corporations are making more money than ever, but very little of that money goes to new content.

I didn't mean to imply they were literally blacklisted, just that getting any kind of budget for something ambitious is a feat for them since I imagine there's always going to be some butthole ready to throw in their faces how out of control that Plastic Beach attempt got, ontop of EMI just imploding around them to boot.

It's brutal to think about how far things have dropped compared to 20 years ago. Jesus, in the late 90s and early 00s between CN, Disney, and Nick you had something like two or three dozen major animated series that were ongoing and releasing ~two dozen or so new episodes a year. Countless movies too.

Its the ad money. They have always been whiling to shill but the ads have become more noticeable because all of the other content they used to make has shrunk down to a few music videos and some Murdoc and 2D commentary vids.
>Ace was unable to speak as a member of Gorillaz since the process of getting approval from Cartoon Network for dialogue from the character was very costly and went over the band's budget. Shame. It was a fun little experiment and I wish they could have done more.
I wonder what they were going to make him say and why 2d seemed annoyed as hell in the video while Ace looked like he was having the time of his life.
>Rockstar could had a shitton of free publicity with it for their online game alone but instead they had chosen to be fricking morons
This is another thing to add to the list of stupid things Rockstar has done. Also, it would've been so easy to run some kind of cross-promotional campaign. We could've had: >Gorillaz-themed missions in GTA Online >Gorillaz outfits in the stores >A new radio station with the band members as hosts >Easter eggs referencing the lore
I will forever be pissed that this didn't happen.
Humility is good. And the only thing in song machine I didn't like was Pink Phantom. How could you get Elton John to collab on fricking auto tune mumble rap?
the autotune rap part wasn't awful by itself but the combo is baffling
but really Elton's vocal was kinda clunky integrated in general, I feel it's the mixing, it sounds like he recorded it in a toilet or something and then they tried to get rid of the noise and then they also compressed it Rick Rubin style, his recording sounded awful
No. Sadly not. Also, not even Humanz was good. I think they stopped to sound good after Plastic Beach (with the only exception of that song about feeling like a Pagan of Song Machine) and that's a shame. I really used to like them
>canon noodle looks like a washed up slag >cartoon noodle looks cute
I wish I could go back to the old days of Gorillaz. This recent video where they interview the watchmaker is just an ad.
>nearly all of the rcording of early live concerts are gone thanks to israelitetube being israelitetube >we still got the animated shorts and promos thanks to some anon who recorded them on videotape and uploaded to his blog that had everything Gorillaz related, which is gone too >internet archive lost a big chunk of backups of the official page when the band was going through their Phases
"Growing on me" is something Gorillaz does best.
I remember in college just having Plastic Beach on loop for over a year in my car.
Even Humanz is growing on me in recent listens of some of the songs.
>Even Humanz is growing on me in recent listens of some of the songs.
I never hated Humanz, but I understood why other people did. That being said, I much prefer the direction they've taken since The Now Now.
Oh shit Thundercat.
I'm one degree from that flylo crossover....unless it already happened.
Noodle has never been attractive.
How old are you? I'm putting together a thesis that half of Noodle's appeal is she's an animated version of "that girl who got hot over summer break" for all the guys that were around the same age as her. Now that we're far out enough that there's a sizable portion of Gorillazgays that didn't have that scenario.
I'll ask the big question here, Will Warner try to use the characters after Damon or Jamie die? They can't possibly make music anymore if that happens. What happens when 2d reaches 71 since they age in real time? Will he still be dancing in short shorts or something?
They have been trying since the band started really but nothing ever stuck. Likely due to Hewett wanting one thing and the studios wanting another.
Also check out Rise of the Ogre its a lorebook with a bunch of book only art going over the events from the start of the band up through 2007-ish all in universe thanks to a completion of interviews formatting.
Shame the block who actually wrote it left after Plastic Beach and never came back.
God i want to frick the shit out of that noodle design
Tara does draw a really cute Noodle.
I love her and zachs art style. I hope her rendition of noodle gets some quality porn soon
I would love to see more Gorillaz art from Zach.
God that helmet design is so fricking cool
What the Frick Happened to Ace After Murdock came back?
Probably went back to the gang.
Moved to the desert and became a survivalist according to the commentary track for Humility.
Okay that Murdoc is just straight up Ace from the Powerpuff Girls, what the hell.
Ace unironically replaced Murdoc for a time.
Tara's Noodle is CUTE
CUUUUUUTE
I'd frick both of them.
She looks like she want to frick her non blood related daddy
i ship it
Cute. And more high-effort than anything Gorillaz has done character-wise in years.
Feel like I should point out that beaning 2D is more a Murdoc thing than a Noodle thing though.
God I miss this noodle
I was watching Melancholy Hill's music video and damn, it was like getting hit with a wave of feelings from years gone by.
I want what they have.
>Long Gone Gulch
These homosexuals thought they had a chance against Hazbin Hotel, but nobody watched it HAHAHHAHAHAHHA

>connections on the inside
Youtube tried to fricking bury Helluva Boss. It only won out in the end through word of mouth.
I really dislike the current official design of the characters,Hewlett should change it back
2022 Noodle looks like Maude Lebowski
awful,just awful
why they changed Murdoc's skin to green is beyond me
Cause it looks cool
no it doesn't
That's what happens when you become a satanist, your skin turns more and more green as you get older.
seems legit
I thought it fit what Plastic Beach was going for. With him going straight-up nuts and rotting from the inside out as his Faustian contracts came to pick up what they were owed.

You can check artbook leaks and see older phases art in current artstyle. It's trash.
I'm diggin Murdoc's threads.
Noodle's design peaked with Demon Days. She's just a hag now, and has been for longer than she's been good-looking.
>She's just a hag now
hell yeah, I love hags
Based hag appreciator.
I bet Noodle would let you call her mommy in bed
She'd probably insist.
Why does Noodle seem to age quicker than everybody?
By her aging logic, the rest of the cast should look 50 or older.
Are we have a clone on our hands?
I wouldn't be surprised if Noodle took frequent drug wienertails throughout her youth and its now catching up with her.
she was a kid at the start and everybody else was practically adults so their aging effects aren't as noticeable, like Murdoc being more green
Would argue with you about that. Noodle should not look so....used considering her appearance in the official art from the Rhinestone eyes video. Also these speculations about her drug abuse are only speculation cause of all of the cast she was the only one who never fell into depression.

What was the intention of "Tranz" anyway? Was David trying to make 2D into a closet transexual?
Rent free.
no u
Imagine the things we could've gotten if Jamie and Damon had money.
Isn’t gorillaz successful as frick? You’d think they would let them splurge on something like that.
Qu8ality Animation is very expensive to make like unless you band is constantly platinum or the like your not going to be able to pull it off. Also like
said Plastic Beach made them go broke so bad that the project never fully recovered.
Add in the constant attempts to make an actual TV show the keep getting sunk we are looking at a cool idea past its prime.
Damon is normal person, can live comfortably for the rest of life rich but not fund a TV show by himself with his own money rich
Plastic Beach is probably a black mark that'll be held over their heads forever. Their eyes were really bigger than their stomachs on that one, and they're just too weird to go over budget like that.
At least it failed due to overambition rather than unambition. PB's not perfect, but there's a lot I like about it
I agree but I'm sure they're in "Stupid morons who can't be trusted with money" jail to every producer in the industry now.
Was Bruce Willis worth it?
Obviously not given somebody is funding their recent push.
Plastic Beach was back in the "good times" of the American economy. We're in the bad.
>We're in the bad.
Oh, anon... we haven't even begun to enter the bad yet.
It's brutal to think about how far things have dropped compared to 20 years ago. Jesus, in the late 90s and early 00s between CN, Disney, and Nick you had something like two or three dozen major animated series that were ongoing and releasing ~two dozen or so new episodes a year. Countless movies too.
What the frick do kids even talk about with their friends at lunch or after school anymore?
shitty indie videogames and phone games
Speaking from experience, we talked video games, upcoming vidya releases, anime, and upcoming anime releases.
Its the ad money. They have always been whiling to shill but the ads have become more noticeable because all of the other content they used to make has shrunk down to a few music videos and some Murdoc and 2D commentary vids.
He did it for free (6:46)
Plastic Beach sank most of their hype and money that Clint Eastwood and Feel Godd Inc created
Real shame, would've been funny.
CN and astronomical israeliteery. What else is new?
Anyone got that Craig McCracken art of Murdoc in prison with the Gangreen Gang from the last thread? That was pretty funny.
No, but that sounds interesting
I wonder what they were going to make him say and why 2d seemed annoyed as hell in the video while Ace looked like he was having the time of his life.
karl plinkerton energy right here
Tell me Cinemaphile, were Gorrilaz the first vocaloid?
Isn’t Miku just a voice software?
Not really no
No I’m pretty sure a vocaloid has a completely synthesized computer generated voice
no it was probably scatcat from the 90's
No, they aren't. The first vocaloid was named Lola. The first anime designs was Meiko. Gorillaz isn't computer-generated so they don't get to count.
no
Alvin and the Chipmunks
The would be The Archies in the 60s
Very good and goofy, glad they got in that art book too.
>Gorillaz
are they good again yet? I dipped after Humanz
Song Machine have some really good songs.
Aries, The Last Chord, Desole, Valley Of The Pagans and Simplicity are legit bangers
Even Damon admits Humanz was a rushed mess
>music video gets taken down
>had to remake the entire video from scratch
I wonder how much that sunk them
lmao the original video was just recorded footage of someone fricking around on GTA V, and then edited the band in the video
Rockstar could had a shitton of free publicity with it for their online game alone but instead they had chosen to be fricking morons
>Rockstar could had a shitton of free publicity with it for their online game alone but instead they had chosen to be fricking morons
This is another thing to add to the list of stupid things Rockstar has done. Also, it would've been so easy to run some kind of cross-promotional campaign. We could've had:
>Gorillaz-themed missions in GTA Online
>Gorillaz outfits in the stores
>A new radio station with the band members as hosts
>Easter eggs referencing the lore
I will forever be pissed that this didn't happen.
I liked Pac-Man too
Humility is good.
I really used to like them
>Random-ass character from Powerpuff Girls canonically becomes an official character of the brand just because
Still weird to me. Not complaining, it's just odd
They probably hoped for many more PPG crossovers but realized CN are worthless greedy c**ts.
I can't imagine who else they would use. I know 2d wore a t-shirt with Mojo Jojo on it, but that's it.
Cute shit
>canon noodle looks like a washed up slag
>cartoon noodle looks cute
I wish I could go back to the old days of Gorillaz. This recent video where they interview the watchmaker is just an ad.
>nearly all of the rcording of early live concerts are gone thanks to israelitetube being israelitetube
>we still got the animated shorts and promos thanks to some anon who recorded them on videotape and uploaded to his blog that had everything Gorillaz related, which is gone too
>internet archive lost a big chunk of backups of the official page when the band was going through their Phases
I hate this fricking future so much is unreal
>bought this song machine poster
>still haven’t found the time to display it
oh well, in the closet it goes
that catsuit is lewder than if she was nude.
Anyone can go naked. It takes a special kind of person to wear a leopard-print catsuit, complete with ears and tail.
Official art btw
She's getting her dirty feet all over the upholstery.
I don’t believe you.
it’s literally in the art book
>The visible trim of her panties.
When did Jamie became BASED?
HE always was he just hit his power level for a while.
>you'll never have back alley sex with hag noodle
>Grannymode Noodle
No. That's just going too far.
Did u rike it?
I think its a step in the right direction
I wasn't crazy about it on the first listen, but it's growing on me.
Some cool textures and great bass playing (ofc) but vocals are way too repetitive
Not awful but certainly needs more variety
Honestly I liked the repetition, it worked with the general vibe.
Oh shit Thundercat.
I'm one degree from that flylo crossover....unless it already happened.
How old are you? I'm putting together a thesis that half of Noodle's appeal is she's an animated version of "that girl who got hot over summer break" for all the guys that were around the same age as her. Now that we're far out enough that there's a sizable portion of Gorillazgays that didn't have that scenario.
Noodle has never been attractive.
Why would you come here to spew such lies, gaygerman?
Noodle has a certain type of unconventional sexiness depending on the art piece.
>Long Gone Gulch
How was the project. And are they still working on it?
doubt
It was a nice pilot
I think they are still pitching it places
>generic whacky cartoon with no plotline
>western
i can see it being dead in the water
Apparently, Ace in the desert is a reference to Fusionfall? Anyway, I wish the other voice actors would get in on these commentaries. especiallly Ace
>Z2 comics still hasn't shipped out the books
>Not even retailers or scalpers have gotten it yet
Made us wait an extra 2 months and still delaying the shit.
2d and Noodle are cute as hell
Their last song I really enjoyed was Desole
who remembers the hell that was the deviantart self-insert mary sues of the gorillaz fandom in the early/mid 2000s?
I'll ask the big question here, Will Warner try to use the characters after Damon or Jamie die? They can't possibly make music anymore if that happens. What happens when 2d reaches 71 since they age in real time? Will he still be dancing in short shorts or something?
Gorillaz'let here. What's the deal with Plastic Beach that fricked them up since?
Over ambition and lack of budget.
Why aren't there any Gorillaz comics or cartoons?
I mean, even a webcomic would be nice and relatively cheap.
>Rise of the Ogre
I tried but it was out-of-print the last time I tried to check it out, never saw anyone post any mega's either.
https://issuu.com/sebastian96/docs/gorillaz_rise_of_the_ogre
Its not a mega but its the book.
Thanks, I'll try to read it before the link dies
If it ain't Jamie Hewlett, then I don't care.
Imagine the timeline where we got Celebrity Harvest.
Thought it was some TTG shit, but nah, this is good actually
the cracker island storyboard was leaked. too bad noodle has an ugly haircut this phase
Looks cute.
any more?

First few boards are like this video
I don't see Murdoc
it’s not complete so he could show up
DAILY REMINDER PHASE 2 NOODLE WAS HER BEST DESIGN, SHE WAS THE FACE OF THE BAND DURING THAT BLESSED ERA.
>tfw russ will NEVER be the face of an album
Russ hasn't had a character beyond "the straight man" since Del and RotO.
>Gorillaz GO!
If they can still cuss I would take it.
Not too far from the fact that Zach worked on TTGO.
I was the characters looked like this in GO
Looking good Raven
>with no plotline
yeah pretty much, the plot was already finished by the time the pilot episode was over
I see the AI is a fan of the older, "your son calls me mommy, too" Noodle.
>2D is currently being voiced by the kid who played Jim Hawkins in Muppet Treasure Island
Weird.
