Recently listened to Soundgarden's full discography, they should be last in place by a far margin.

PJ, STP, Nirvana, and AiC all have at least 5 or more amazing songs, Soundgarden's only good songs are black hole sun and jesus christ pose

To be real, they are all pretty comparable, all of them only have like a handful of good songs, you can flagrantly pretend that I just don’t know what I’m talking about/haven’t heard all their stuff as much as you want, but they all basically have like 5 good songs. Grunge is defined by like 15-20ish songs tops. Don’t get me wrong the best of the genre is really great, but it’s pretty shitty past the hits. The hits are the hits for a reason, and it’s usually because the rest of their discogs are shit.

I know he killed a bunch of people, but my sympathies lie with the shooter. I'm a complete misanthrope who hates people and society, and if those kids didn't want to die, they shouldn't have been so cruel.

from someone who's listened to the entire discography of all of them, I'll offer you an unbiased ranking:
    1. AiC
    2. Soundgarden
    3. PJ
    4. STP
    5. Smashing Pumpkins
    6. Nirvana
    7. Mudhoney to round it out let's say

With that being said, Nirvana had 2 and a 3/4 good albums, they caught lightning in a bottle and I am no purist who'll mindlessly hate on them, both In Utero and Nevermind are superb, but you can't compare them to the others simply because of the volume. RIP Kurt although you would've probably been a seething demented leftoid in this current era.

Kurt never would have committed suicide if he owned a monster truck.

      >you can't compare them to the others simply because of the volume
Yet you have AIC as your #1? Nirvana had 3 full lengths and a solid compilation with Incesticide plus the unplugged album. That pretty much matches the output of Layne AIC.

        Anonymous

Don't know if it's right or not, but I consider the current Cantrell-propelled AiC fairly soulless but still part of their legacy and decent musically. Furthermore, Layne AIC far out-match Nirvana on many "terrains". As I said I very much like both and perhaps there is some bias there, but that's how I view things.

          >Don't know if it's right or not, but I consider the current Cantrell-propelled AiC fairly soulless
It is right. I would consider any of the material past the 90s for any of the bands that you listed in your first post as soulless. Past a certain age, musicians just lose the creativity and edge they had in their youth.

            Anonymous

Read until the end, Cantrell hasn't lost his edge, Kinney and Inez are still there. Alice in Chains the brainchild of LS/JC is still alive, touring and releasing the odd good song every once in a while. It's a soulless project, but the show must go on.
If we were to compare just short eras and take '87-'97 for example, then every comparison is purely subjective and it depends on your taste.

              >Read until the end,
I did. You called them decent which would imply that they have in fact lost their edge.

accurate but STP and smashing pumpkins aren't grunge

It's soulless because AiC lost their edge. Hell, I would consider Cantrell's solo shit better than what Alice is putting out right now.

Reminder that grunge ruined rock n roll forever in just that short time in the early 90s. Almost feels like it was by design. That said STP was based.
