I honestly don't understand how attempting to bring more realism to gaming ends up with this result. I understand that modern gaming companies are filled with women who I guess want to make the character designs less sexy for reasons, but even with that goal how do the end up at hideous. If realism is the goal there are actual attractive women in real life. Couldn't they be less bombshell fantasy but still be attractive? Why don't the male designers at these companies at least fight for that?
For many(not in this case I believe) they use facial motion capture, which along with not being perfect technology will tend to add details that women work to cover up with make-up. The artists will then not cover these up because that's part of their face and they don't understand make-up. This is mostly why male characters don't have this issue with faces because men don't wear make-up.
Plus the prevalence of facial mocap in the first place means that people who literally exist are winding up in games and no actual flesh and blood human is going to be as perfect as a completely made up cartoon character. If you're drawing or modeling a character from scratch then you can make them look however the frick you want. But it'd be really awkward to mocap a person and then be like "okay, we're going to fix all your perceived flaws digitally" so they don't do that. That's on top of the aforementioned issues with facial mocap itself, which still has a tinge of uncanny valley to deal with. Even objectively attractive actresses can look bizarre when their features are reproduced in-game. There's an indescribable but perceptible weirdness that happens. And, again, you don't want to be rude and start telling them why their face sucks and the modelers have to change stuff.

I honestly don't understand how attempting to bring more realism to gaming ends up with this result. I understand that modern gaming companies are filled with women who I guess want to make the character designs less sexy for reasons, but even with that goal how do the end up at hideous. If realism is the goal there are actual attractive women in real life. Couldn't they be less bombshell fantasy but still be attractive? Why don't the male designers at these companies at least fight for that?
For many(not in this case I believe) they use facial motion capture, which along with not being perfect technology will tend to add details that women work to cover up with make-up. The artists will then not cover these up because that's part of their face and they don't understand make-up. This is mostly why male characters don't have this issue with faces because men don't wear make-up.
Plus the prevalence of facial mocap in the first place means that people who literally exist are winding up in games and no actual flesh and blood human is going to be as perfect as a completely made up cartoon character. If you're drawing or modeling a character from scratch then you can make them look however the frick you want. But it'd be really awkward to mocap a person and then be like "okay, we're going to fix all your perceived flaws digitally" so they don't do that. That's on top of the aforementioned issues with facial mocap itself, which still has a tinge of uncanny valley to deal with. Even objectively attractive actresses can look bizarre when their features are reproduced in-game. There's an indescribable but perceptible weirdness that happens. And, again, you don't want to be rude and start telling them why their face sucks and the modelers have to change stuff.
