Film rights might expire soon. Lots of contracts have a thing that say like "if you don't use the rights to make a film in X years then rights revert to original owner". They also use less popular shit like this to bring in or test out new actors/directors. Most Disney stars start off in a low budget movie/tv show. Or maybe they made a deal with someone that said if you work exclusively for us for a few years then we promise to give you a movie to write or direct, and now Disney has to make good. Maybe it's just plain trying to meet a quota for having a certain amount of minority directed movies. It is probably a combination of all those reasons.

Anyways point is there's tons of moronic reasons these shitty reboots get made.

    > Oyelowo assures fans of 1991’s The Rocketeer that the sequel is in good hands. “I was a big fan of the first one. Actually had the poster up in my bedroom as a teenager. In our film, he’s going to be an ex-Tuskegee airman, so it’s still in that 1940s milieu..”

I can assure him, no one in 30 years will remember that POS. It will be reviled and relegated to the dustbins of history as people try hard to forget the eras when we pretended blacks were worthy of lead roles simply for being black. Hollywood believes there are four demographics: men, women, young men, and young women. And Hollywood believes every film they produce has to hit three of these demographics. This is why you get romance subplots shoehorned into every action film, why woke shit gets stuffed into childrens movies, why Lady Gaga has to be dumped into Joker 2, why kids films play dad rock for the parents, and so on. Unfortunately, by trying to appeal to more demographics these films end up appealing to no one. Not even the most rabid feminists went to see Ghostbusters. Men both young and old shunned Indiana Jones and the Insufferable Niece. But Hollywood is going to keep doing it.

Everything we are seeing TODAY has already been approved / written / filmed YEARS AGO.
We are seeing a lot of blacks in roles (even more than usual) because many of these projects were written in 2020 / 2021 (like this one) when racial issues were at the forefront in the US.
Disney would want to have more black representation in general, but what you're seeing now is a delay of what was at the forefront 3-4 years ago (or more).
