In the original script it's because the Great Valley is Heaven.
I think int he one that made it to theaters they were all just separated by the Earthquake or some other event off screen.
I fully admit to be remembering secondhand info from back in 2011, in a thread I'm posting at 2am. But a major part of the first Land Before Time movie was about Death and Faith in the face of it.

Wait what? I've never herd that before.
I've heard the story too but I don't think it was ever seriously considered as being explicit
Here's an earlier version of the script back when Petrie communicated via whistles and Littlefoot was Thunderfoot

I remember growing increasingly annoyed by the many, many sequels of Land Before Time, though I still went out and bought a tape of one of them every other week.
I'm with them until Stone of Cold Fire, that's about when I aged to the point we didn't buy the newer ones. I don't think I even fully learned what the rest of the films were about until the last few years when I saw more discussions about them here and on youtube or whatever. The movies up to that point are still nostalgic fun despite their many many shortcomings CHRIST STONE OF COLD FIRE CAME OUT 22 YEARS AGO

I don't think it's true, at least not at the point where the story was more or less ready to be voiced and animated. If the ending was them entering the afterlife, why are all the characters that up until then were alive there, but Littlefoot's (Thunderfoot's) mother isn't, and instead leads him as a cloud vision? It has the smell of an internet urban legend.
How did she die so quickly from just getting a chunk taken out of her back? It didn't look like it hit anything vital. And you'd think it would take a such a large creature longer to die of blood loss or disease.
2nd from the right and straight on til morning.
frick you, you eldritch child abducting otherworldly phantom
Why did his Grandparents leave them alone again?

Yeah, "dead all along" is the laziest of theories.
They didn't? He wandered off with Cera when the Sharptooth attacked and then the clusterfrick earthquake happened and cut the kids off
Man, children's films used to have fricking teeth.
She is kinda thick.
