Because Asura wasn't actually going to be in an episode. It could be written off as nerds from other places arguing, and ignored. Dimitri is going to fight someone, and by my count about 5 or 6 people have asked in these threads who the hell he is.

Dimitri is a niche character, sure, but so are a lot of characters on Death Battle.
I can't be certain of that, but I'd say Dimitri is a level of obscure from a franchise that is sometimes not well regarded around these parts. There's an element of disdain based on his origin series, as well. Besides, even if Asura's Wrath didn't sell well it probably has a greater reach in terms of recognition in both the general Death Battle community and the nerd community at large. Those QTEs were spectacular to watch.
Nah, I just think Asura's Wrath fans tend to try inserting it into everything.
But there is merit to discussing if vs battles discussion tend to warp the perception of popularity of certain characters.

Realistically speaking though, Gear 5 negates a lot of Naruto’s arsenal. Even though Luffy gets stomped in AP his speed advantage, durability negation, and turning all of Naruto’s shit into rubber should give him the fight

Why are movie characters so horribly underused?
Most of them aren't particularly impressive.
The ones that are either Kaiju (who are hard to find fights for since like 1.5 franchise dominate the scene). Or it's licenseshit like Marvel or Transformers.
Especially since the people making & watching this kinda shit prefer anime/video games/cartoons.

I'd argue movie characters are requested fairly often, it's just that movies are a broader medium than most and we don't automatically think they're all movie characters. Gru vs Megamind is a request with movie characters, but so is Rocky vs Karate Kid/whatever boxer, and any Indiana Jones request, and pretty much any Disney movie request.
