From what I hear, the Q dragon lost against powerful magical creatures, not against children and old men with zero powers. That should be the decider.
Discord usually lost by being outbullshitted more or less; extremely powerful magic drains, getting sick from magical creatures, Elements of Harmony hax, and being caught off-guard by one of the aforementioned factors.
Otherwise, while not invincible, he's basically always the most powerful character in the setting with the most widespread magic/source of power by default, and he practically has no limits to what he can do; he wouldn't need to make a deal to get inside someone's mind as Bill does.
And since DB only works in overpowering rather than outsmarting (at least not in a way that doesn't look like a cop out) then he certainly had an edge there.

As a horsegay that rooted for him, that's true. But as what Death Battle said, that barrier that blocked Bill from the Shackitron was a specific ritual that happened to use unicorn hair. In any other narrative the Goombas at best just delay Mario. You don't see people going "oh the undead in GOW hurt Kratos when you play the game, they must be hyper-concept universal plus".

If cole loses I reckon running out of power for the 3rd time would be how he dies

Cole has options to recharge his power without the usage of an energy source. Karmatic Overload gives him instant unlimited energy, basic bolt upgrades let him recharge his power just by hitting people with them, converting bullets into energy gives him power, and so on. If he ever gets desperate he can just siphon off of Alex himself.
The lightning storm also doesn’t require any energy to utilize, at least not if he’s using Ionic Storm. Even the IF1 version of the storm didn’t take up that much power unless you held it down for a while.
Oh yeah and Cole did more damage to John who was unfazed by a nuke, as well as his own explosion that turned Empire City into a smoldering mess.

Cole can fire 3 storms at a time and they don't drain his lightning. And Cole can also drain lightning directly from a storm. Mercer is becoming a permanent smear on the ground.
So if it's a storm or coles fighting on home turf/near a lot of power sources and Alex isn't currently giving him heat to stop the energy re-up, than yeah alex is done, but there's the scenarios where cole wins are outnumbered by his losses, alex just needs a lot less going for him compared to cole
