I doubt Toph would be able to earthbend this particular sand and it would probably be the deciding factor of the fight. Toph hasn't met something she can't bend, but she's never tried to bend anything with chakra/life energy before either. Just iron particles in stone.

It actually has been pointed out before though. Anons shit on season 8's performance as as whole. When Saitama vs Popeye, the most popular match in that season, got surpassed in just two week by Omni-Man vs Homelander, you know that something went terribly wrong with season 8.
In Link vs Cloud round 2's particular case, as the other anon mentioned, it likely has to do with the "burned bridge" theory. They likely did lose most of the FF7 fandom with the first two FF7 matches alone. Death Battle cannot longer play effectively the FF7 card in an attempt to win back its fans, but that's likely an issue with a lot of fandoms in general.
Besides the FF7 fandom, I doubt most Bleach, Power Rangers/Super Sentai, GoW, Doom, Harry Potter, Bayonetta, AOT, ONE, Sonic, TF, Ben 10, and most importantly, Dragon Ball fans, will ever bother watching new Death Battles at this point. Comparing the original Goku and Vegeta fights against Reverse Flash vs Goku Black and Thor vs Vegeta's views is just pitiful. And I dare to say even some Marvelgays are starting to hate and drop Death Battle, because they are realizing that in DB, Marvel will always be 2nd to DC.
The KNY episode did also subpar, considering its huge fandom. Another potential bridge that got burned right away with one Death Battle alone, just like AOT's.

That wasn't even a popular matchup in the fandom, the most popular MU was Milio vs Rengoku because those two characters are loved by a ton of people. Had they done this fight as a mid season finale or a season starter it would've done pretty well.
The KnY fandom isn't like the JoJo fandom, where they're desperate for the tiniest bit of content to sate their hunger. Add that onto the fact that most didn't care for John vs Tangerine as opposed to the fight mentioned below, it makes sense that it only did decently.
I do agree with you on the point that Death Battle needs to stop taking suggestions from the small insulated bubble around them and the research team. It's all well and good to satisfy your fanbase sometimes, but if you want to grow your fanbase you gotta find out what people outside of it want. Look at Noel vs Aigis, for instance. Some very vocal members of the fanbase want it, despite it being a shittastic fight on par with Shadow vs Ryuko, but it's DBX episode was the 2nd or 3rd worst performing episode of it's season. It did about as well as Wii Fit Trainer vs Dhalsim and half as well as Raphael vs Wolverine and Iron Man vs Mega Man X, and no one is crying out for those to be made into full episodes. They have to learn to ignore the loud idiots, and find what the general audience really wants.
The KNY or Ufotable fandoms in general are super elitistic and spoiled in terms of animation. So of course they wouldn't care about a low-budget and low-effort sprite fight.

Team Fortress, despite its cast ensemble, hasn't been relevant since season 3. Bleach just keeps losing, Bayonetta and Tifa's matches are infamous among waifugays, and Power Rangers is fricking cursed. At least fanbases like Naruto and One Piece can brag about certain victories, and in MHA or OP's situation, they are building up to Luffy and Deku in a good way. On the opposite end, KNY got its protag killed right away, in a half-assed match no one wanted. And where do you go with Tanjiro, except down?
