Because it has aged poorly in certain aspects and Gaiman himself admits that he would handle it a bit differently because his understanding of trans issues has improved. You can be groundbreaking and progressive for its time and still end up being offensive once enough time has passed because your art is always a reflection of its time.
What exactly aged poorly? I saw people upset about the moon goddess not seeing her as a woman because she wasn't born with a uterus and couldn't menstruate. In a story about scummy and petty gods, violent gods, rapist gods, this was what they chose to complain about. They were dumb.
The people complaining about the moon goddess were largely "gender critical" morons who never read the arc and just wanted to paint Neil as a transphobe in some dumb twitter spat
It's just another boohoo aren't you sad for the troony story. I don't mean to flatten it too much but it's in the genre of minority suffering for the enjoyment of others. So yes its nice that the trans woman is there and isn't seen as a monster, but its also really trite and condescending how they're an object of pity tagging along with a prettier cis woman.

Gaiman wrote what was for the time a progressive portrayel of trans people. But it was progressive as compared to other depictions where trans people were rapists or punchlines. Obviously as more trans depictions stacked up with increasing nuance and new visions, it looks less well written and progressive by comparison. Gaiman doesn't seem to be offended by the march of time, why should you be?
