I agree that most modern directors modify scripts too much, or worse try to write all their own movies, but in Ridley's case I'd say the bigger problem is he just adapts the script straight-up instead of making it better. Last Duel is an example, it was well directed but the script was weak and so was the film. Some minor changes would have really improved it
