"Demeter..." is the final nail in the coffin for Dracula on the Big Screen

>So, you get scene after scene of a single crew member on watch at night, knowing they’re just waiting to be butchered. It’s stupid characters to the n-th degree. At a certain point in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, you just throw up your hands and stop caring. The movie lost me early on and never found a way to win me back. Plus, they opt to unnecessarily kill a dog, which is a surefire way to keep me out of your corner. That’s the least of this production’s problems, but it certainly didn’t help them any with yours truly.

>The Last Voyage of the Demeter is one of the worst films of 2023 and an actively bad time with the movie. Incredibly let down. Your mileage may vary, of course, but it outright sucked. Dracula, despite his many crimes, still deserves better than this. Yuck.

It’s much more likely he didn’t have the money to start his practice, patients refused to go to a black doctor (which is their right), and/or he couldn’t hire the proper staff because they didn’t want to work for a black man.

I dunno man that's what he says at the end of the movie in his "muh racism" speech.

Just because something is fake doesn't mean it isn't uncomfortable to look at. If somebody made a Moloch movie and put an animatronic baby in a bronze plate and burned it, complete with screaming SFX and the prop baby's skin peeling away, people would find that fricked to look at too. You don't have to put that sort of imagery in people's heads of helpless children or animals being killed. You can double down and go with the pea-brain "It is fake, what is the problem?" if you want, but then don't be shocked when you get push-back for it

So the entire movie is Dracula's boat journey and it plays out like a slasher movie. Sounds pretty kino actually, but the Black in the image has killed my interest in watching it. Sad!

the black guy is explained by racism and I kinda like this. he wasnted to be doctor but university kicked him because he is black, so joined the crew of almost pirates and became their on-board doctor practicing medicine

i wish more movies found a similar reasoning if they have to put mandatory black guy. of course better not to but i prefer this than blatant revisionism.

its still shit movie but just nice to see actually trying to explain black guy than just forcing in for the sake of it.

Why did they even accept him in the first place then? He was obviously there long enough to get a medical education if he’s serving as the doctor on that ship.
        This is so moronic.
“Kicked him out for being black”? It’s much more likely he got extremely uppity and in those times, you couldn’t do that, no matter your skin color. Things were very reserved. It’s safer to say, “yes sir” to even your detractors and try to quietly resolve things behind the scenes.

          This.
It’s a complete fabrication that is beyond stupid. They didn’t kick him out for being black.
If they were gatekeeping him because of his race, he would have been denied admissions. That’s a much safer place to deny someone because it’s likely thousands of people had superior applications to the black man and if it were ever questioned, it’d be easy to quantify why he was denied.
Kicking him out of school for being black? That could tarnish the school’s reputation, even in those times.

No it fricking wouldn't. Races were separate (as they should be, race mixing is evil), Blacks were likely identified as "the beasts of the field" back then. It makes no sense because they wouldn't of admitted him to the school in the first place so he couldn't of begun the degree at all.

Also, turns out the first black doctor in the UK was actually an American freed slave, who studied in Glasgow in the mid 1800s. So it's not totally out of the realm of possibility (though it's still forced and unnecessary. As is the woman onboard).

One is bad idea done well, other is good idea fricked up beyond human comprehension.
Renfield was bad movie because it was stupid drama about cops with Dracula in it but plotwise and characters' action made somehow sense. Demeter is just incredibly stupid in every single way. Dracula's coffin is one big crate with dragon stample on it. NOBODY even dared to check this box during the daylight. The movie is like Alien Covenant but with every crew member having negative IQ. Apart from black guy of course, no need to say.

It's a fine idea for a movie, instead of adapting the whole novel as is typical. Could have been good, regardless of box office performance, but they made it political. Dracula will be adapted again that's for certain. Somebody out there will wanna make their grand version of it like Coppola, which got better with passage of time.

I don't understand why. "The main character survives the horror movie" is an obvious prediction. This is one of my favorite parts of the book. The imagery of a completely empty ghost ship except for the captain, dead with his hands tied around the ship's wheel with a rosary; is cool as hell and genuinely pretty unnerving. Reading the ship logs and seeing how it played out was extremely well done.
The film should have been completely detached from Dracula and the reveal should have actually been a reveal. Make the trailer just the ship coming in mostly empty and then a detective/insurance guy wondering what happened. He opens the ship's log and then it transitions to a flashback which is the majority of the film. Don't show anything that reveals the monster or even that it's supernatural at all.

      Anonymous

I agree that would be better, but that makes it hard to market the movie unless you have a famous director or big stars to carry it

  46. 9 months ago

Anyways I liked it. The women does BTW. The prediction was that only the black guy and the girl would live but she died. In fact she had been infected before she even got on the ship and the blood transfusion only delayed the change.

        Anonymous

D is absolutely shit if you are trying to pass it off as an 'adaptation' of Dracula.
The Nobility in VHD, as well as the setting as a whole, are not anywhere close to the kind of tone that Stoker went for. Vampire Hunter D is more like Castlevania where it's superpowered monsters fighting each other and humans with extremely high tech nonsense defending themselves. Both films are excellent (and a bunch of the novels are fun too) but they play out as shonen powerlevel nonsense mixed with some kaiju tropes. Claiming that we should give Dracula to the nips is exposing yourself as an extremely small brained homosexual.

Still better that anything Hollywood's made in the past decade. I'd take a sword-wielidng dhampir slicing the shit out of a giant Frankenstein'd colossus over some LGBTQ+ African vampire, with a troony axe wound, that argues about the glass ceiling & the wage gap in Victorian England and its predominantly white populace whilst making a backhanded white privilege critique any day. Deal with it.

The UK probably made the best Dracula movies ever (though '92 gets credit for arguably being the most faithful adaptation) with the Hammer stuff.

            >entire first act is fish out of water hijinx with them saying woke shit like "intersectionality" and getting BTFO by society
            >male authority figures in said historical time continue to attempt to arrest the woke time traveler due to suspicion of mental insanity
            >the time traveler is forced to write a novel without woke shit in it to prove that their mind is not stuck in a broken state
            >last act shows the woke writer struggling to come to terms with their task, the moment of catharsis comes when the writer finally understands why traditional values are so important

    there's a hilarious review here
    >

For some odd reason the two main characters were a black man who was a doctor and got a degree at Cambridge and a female Romanian villager who spoke three languages. The doctor's father was a deck hand so getting into Cambridge University would have been easy in the Aristocratic Victorian era. Stupid , Eastern europe was a backwater so where the hell would a simple villager learn 3 languages with nary a school in sight, Ridiculous. Silly woke comments were dropped throughout and everyones teeth and diction were perfect. These are Russian and Romanian Sailors for God sake. Should be tough and fearless. The ship was great, as was the premise. It certainly had the ominous atmosphere needed. But modern woke ideology crept in. WHY ON EARTH WOULD THESE TWO PEOPLE BE ON THIS SHIP??? The Director blew it.

You can't ban words, but shit made for modern sensibilities, history revisionism, etc are longer, so woke is a concise word that sumarises perfectly the current state of filmaking

woke is perfect because it's the word libshits coined for themselves. it just picked up a bad connotation after everyone saw what "woke" actually means

"woke" came into use because we're no longer allowed to just say we don't like gays, or blacks. You're aware of that. Restricting speech does nothing to alter the aversion. It just adds fuel to the fire.

So "woke" is actually just "homosexual" and "Black person" as a substitute? I got it.

stop playing coy you depressed, emotional basket case. the word is in the damned dictionary:
          https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/woke
aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)
But we will only succeed if we reject the growing pressure to retreat into cynicism and hopelessness. … We have a moral obligation to "stay woke," take a stand and be active; challenging injustices and racism in our communities and fighting hatred and discrimination wherever it rises.—

That's exactly what it is. It is a catch-all euphemism for "gays", "trannies", "nogs", "jews", "feminism", "israeli interests", "israeli indoctrination", etc. A euphemism is needed most of the time because if you don't use one, you'll be punished by ZOG enforcers, like what happened to that autistic British girl who called the zogbot woman a lesbian a few days ago. She got dragged to jail by seven zogbots

Might be my autism but I’m genuinely angry at dog loving homosexuals who cry about dogs in movies dying, then have zero care when people are being tortured and murdered

They know the dog isn’t dead. It’s fake you gays

I watch reaction videos so this especially irks me, I think the absolute worst offenders of this is when the main character has to fight off a dog that’s literally attacking them and they still get upset he kicks it or shoots it or whatever.

Like literally, what the frick world are they living in. Would they lie down and let the pit bull eat their face to protect the wholesome doggo?

    Specifically I remember

    >Batman in dark Knight throws off attacking dogs, we hear a well from one. People genuinely getting pissy as if this is too far
    >no country for old men when he shoots the dog seconds before it’s attempting to jump at him and kill him

don't hate people for loving dogs. it's not their fault. they're just well intentioned people who are weak to manipulation. that's why this shoot the dog thing is in every movie now. there's some kind of cheat code from sticking it in your narrative

It’s just dumb. People really care less if they had a similar scene of a baby being killed instead of a dog in John wick

    I watched this last night

It was basically a long episode of The Terror, with Dracula instead of the Tunbaaq, and severely worse dialog and characters. (The worst of which was the empowered mary sue female)

In a way it's biggest flaw is that it's more a giant bat monster movie. But apart from one, the kills weren't interesting and dracula lacked the required flamboyance to hold the movie up.

imo a major flaw is that it's quite drawn out, but if you already watch lots of tv shows yeah it's good. lots of master and commander captainy shit.

So they're unaware of the Dracula story? Where Renfield is the only survivor found on the Demeter before he is committed to a sanitorium for the madness the voyage instilled? It wasn't "Dribbling madman and sweet little good boy only survivors aboard ship of death!" In the headlines, I can guarantee.

who cares? Dracula has been adapted to films for a century and every one of them has altered it from the book somehow.
the only thing that matters is if the film is good.
this one is not and it's because the pacing is boring, the dialog sucks, the dracula is not interesting enough, and the characters are one dimensional.
