The only way that would’ve happened is if the show ended in season 2, which it should’ve in hindsight.

Nah, this was a pretty sad parallel to real world incidents with mental disease, like Alzheimers, where the victim gets confused about the nature of their relationships with other individuals. An incident like that with my grandpa left my aunt in tears because not only does it hit home just how bad the deterioration is, it also ruins a sense of safety and platonic love one expects from a father.
