it's 2D characters on a CGI backdrop with catchy tunes from the early 2000s

wouldn't say Disney wanted TP to fail, but they weren't ready to animate CGI just yet

Well the marketing literally revealed the twist. Granted most should know it nut maybe kids wouldn't.

      >Twist
Silver being a pirate? They make that exceedingly obvious from the moment you meet him. Of course it's stupid to show that off at all but still, there's worse plot developments to spoil in a trailer

It's just cope. Treasure Planet, Sinbad, Atlantis, Titan AE, all had something in common and they flopped. I don't think it can be explained by sabotage or poor marketing.

Titan AE and Sinbad flopped because they are not enjoyable films. Simple as that. They didn't deserve to be hits.

I always questioned the marketing thing because that just isn't the way I remember it. The movie had tie-in merchandise, video games, a planned straight-to-DVD sequel, all the usual promotional things they do with every film. If Disney had truly intended for it to fail so they'd have an excuse to kill Deep Canvas, then why spend even more resources on all that?

        Anonymous

This honestly. I just think people meant bad marketing because it couldn't appeal to the target demographic, but that's more an issue with the film itself than presentation.

The truth is somewhere in between probably. One thing is for sure is that Disney used its failure as an excuse to springboard into 3DCG films.

Disney's 3D movies after Treasure Planet weren't any better, in fact their biggest non-Pixar animated hit in the 2000s was Lilo & Stitch which was 2D.

Except that's literally Michael Eisner's own words
            >To visualize this story, Disney selected 50 percent of its 2D animation staff to put them in a CGI animation team, and placed them through a rigorous eighteen-month training program with George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic, which included an introductory to Alias's Maya that would serve as the main 3D animation software used on the project. This was due to Disney CEO Michael Eisner announcing that the studio would move to computer animation in response to a downturn caused by rising competition from Pixar and DreamWorks Animation computer animated features, as well as the unsatisfactory box office performances of The Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet (2002), and Home on the Range (2004)
Paraphrased from wikipedia because the article he states this in is no longer available, but there is an obvious and clear correlation.

              Anonymous

Anon I want you to re-read that quote and tell me where Eisner states that 3d is cheaper. He doesn't. Instead he states that 3D films were more successful at the box office. Hell his quote essentially admits that the switch was an expensive one. The switch to 3d was never about it being cheaper, it was about it being more financially viable.

                >re-read that quote
It's not a quote though, like I said it's paraphrased from Wikipedia. I tried to see the exact article to see his exact words but the internet archive didn't have it.

Disney (and dreamworks) being too soft to approach action and adventure when at the same time Anime and Franchises like LoTR/Harry Potter/Star wars were pushing the envelope

Disney was under the delusion that young boys would want to see its action adventure films even after years of making its brand synonymous to family-friendly movies.

You're right. How could Disney expect to appeal to little boys after making movies like Aladdin, the Lion King, Hercules, and Tarzan?

With the exception of Tarzan, those were bog standard Disney movies with song numbers.

Anon who was the target audience for Aladdin, Lion King, and Hercules? Here's a hint they weren't girls. Not to mention even Tarzan had standard song numbers. You're wrong.

The thing here is the tastes of the target audience was changing faster than Disney had anticipated so naturally the formula cultivated in the renaissance wasn't working anymore.

Pooh as an IP was making money regardless, it was at a state where it didn't need TV and movies anymore to survive.

I suspect that "major blockbuster" was never in the cards, but Disney absolutely screwed the pooch with advertising and when they decided to put it in theaters.

      >screwed the pooch with advertising
I don't think any better advertising could've saved it, it came out too late at a time when the target audience would rather watch stuff like Spider-Man, LoTR, Harry Potter, etc.

        Anonymous

Anon, it came "at a time" when Harry Potter and Santa Clause 2 (A SEQUEL TO A SUCCESSFUL DISNEY MOVIE, WHY ARE YOU COMPETING WITH YOURSELF?!?) were in cinemas. Like I said, I don't think it was likely to become a major hit, but simple picking a better time to put it in theaters would have done a lot.
