The twist is shocking for like two seconds and only impresses the midwit class of people that occupy the country where it was made. It makes no actual sense and you know the kicker? They didn't build it up at all like in the remake where finding his daughter was the main focus unlike in the Korean one where he just wanted revenge and the letters to his daughter were a small detail that wasn't brought up a lot. I'd argue the reveal in the remake was handled better due to making it his sole motivation and having the villain use that against him.

Apparently in the novel the guy who locked him up did so because the MC cried when he sang at school and he was so humiliated that someone lower class than him cried and tried to identify with his pain or something and he locked him up and when confronted, he kills himself.
I dunno I like some Korean movies.
The Wailing and A Tale of Two Sisters were also fun imo, also with ridiculous twists but at least those fit the tone better and aren't nearly as overhyped. But I will agree that Korea isn't exactly one of the world's kino hotspots and it's annoying how much normalgays give them a pass for some unknown reason

This movie could have been good if the motivation for the villain was well written. The entire thing felt too dramatic for the weak ass backstories and the weak "grief" of the mc. Also the fact that hypnotism is involved and actions were influenced makes the drama hit even less since there's outside interference. Asian people can't make a good film to save their fricking lives.

That's not what anyone is saying and that's not even what people are criticizing about it. They're saying the protagonist's "sin" is weak garbage because he didn't even do it purposefully. He was orchestrated into doing it, didn't know who the woman was, so it was 0% his fault that it happened anyway. If it's the antagonist that made it happen then the drama is just fricking moronic. If the mc was really flawed and just did it himself, then there would be some gray morality or whatever. But the shitty antagonist and the hypnotism shit really just kills this movie. Bad writing, bad characters, forced drama.

There was no familial bond until the reveal at all so it was just a man and a woman doing it. With all that said, yeah the writing in this film is SHIT. Melodrama and over the top amateur acting specially in the final half.
