Did they ever explain how he went from a caring dad in the flashbacks to being neglectful and indifferent towards his son. That always felt like a loose thread to me.
His intro on Islands had him scamming people trying to escape; Martin was always scummy, and while he turned it around for Minerva and Finn he still spent far more time separated from them than together, so he just went back to his naturally selfish self during that time. Knowing that, it's more likely he'd be a dick to Finn who he last saw as a baby more than a decade and however many scummy adventures in between ago.

They all just adore babies because they're basically dolls you can project all their personal thoughts and feelings on (and offload all the actual work of taking care of them on someone else).
