Did the ending ruin the whole show for you

I stopped watching GoT much earlier so I wasn't really attached to the show.

The showrunners never gave a frick about the fantasy elements, so no shit it was going to end badly.

They have said before that they hated the magic and were only interested in appeasing the soccer moms and football uncles and hockey dads, etc.

They just turned it into ye old tropey fantasy, what with the fireball slinging cave elves or the low iq skeleton npcs or the marvel tier night’s king villain.

There is no night’s king in the books, btw. He was just some mad night’s watch commander who put his dick into a female white walker.

The fantasy elements were the worst elements though, and there was really no way to show that stuff without it being total cheese-dick nonsense. How do you expect a zombie plot to end without it being ridiculous? We're talking zombies here.

        >The showrunners never gave a frick about the fantasy elements, so no shit it was
Agreed. The show was at its best in the first seasons when magic was merely implied through folklore etc, when they toed that line between fantasy and reality. I'm not saying they never should have showed magic explicitly, but they could have gone on longer riding the mystery and superstition of it. The idea of how much people were willing to entrust to their various gods and spirits, when we weren't even sure if these were real or had any power, was a fascinating angle.

No. I watched the show after it aired and didn't even know how much shit was getting until I finished. There's definitely a bit of decline in parts of the final few seasons and the pacing is ridiculously jarring but overall I still loved it and I liked where they ended each character. Looking up some of the discussions about how people wanted it to end makes me believe the vast majority of people watching week to week succumbed to the hype and got too attached to their headcanon

I guess thinking back on it, I would've liked to see more of Dany after Mrs Sandae's death if this is where they were going with her character. All we get of her is information that she's not eating but they act as if thats something her character would normally do. Her going nuclear on KL would feel more earned if we got to see more of her paranoia and her feeling that the walls are closing in. I mean they kinda shaft everyone in the character work and focused too much on the action but missing out on Danys side of things is where I think the final season suffers the most. I still loved the finale though. Very bittersweet across the board and felt like a natural way to end things. The Long Night was also one of the best episodes in the show.

Not b8, but it's definitely opposite to the general reaction of the show. If I posted it to reddit it would be down voted and deleted it immediately. I can elaborate though if you want, I don't mind discussing the show with people I disagree with. Like I said though I think most people got wrapped up in a hatemob, many such cases with popular media. I don't think it's great but I don't have a problem with like 90% of the common grievances people mention and most of the problems I have with the final few seasons are barely mentioned if at all.

I disagree, I loved it. Felt the stakes the whole way through and had one of the best character moments in the show with Theon sacrificing himself. Gave Aryas character a satisfying conclusion to a training arc that lasted pretty much the entire series since she met Syrio. It had some absolutely God tier shots and imo "The Night King" is the best score in the show. "Light of the Seven" is close though.

What made it "CW tier" for you.

Why did they put the catapults IN FRONT of the soldiers? Why wouldn’t they put them behind the defensive line or the walls?

                Anonymous

Frick the catapults, why was everyone fighting in the courtyard instead of retreating to the keep? All the stuff with the catapults doesn't matter in the long run because the episode would obviously still end with the enemy breaching the walls so they're just window dressing that doesn't mean anything. But if they'd actually retreated from the first wall to the second wall(the famous feature of Winterfell) and then had to retreat to the keep while the dead just keeps piling up then it would have actually stood out amongst all the other battles and become kino. You'd have soldiers manning murder holes and one-hit-killing everything that comes through a doorway, using the defences to the fullest advantage so that even the lowliest fighter could kill fifty enemies before one gets him, but as the fighting goes on everyone gets more and more tired as the enemy just keeps on coming and they lose a guy here and there. The dread and desperation would build as the characters switch out so that one of them can rest for a bit, but the rest gets shorter and shorter as people die and the fatigue starts getting to everyone. Let us get the feeling that the battle has been going on for a long time and the dead simply won't stop coming.

Instead of having the Dothraki ride out to their certain death and resurrection, only to respawn for the next episode, and Sam lying on his back in the open courtyard stabbing deadites in the foot as they surround him and somehow surviving, with the good guys winning the battle in like an hour.

                >why was everyone fighting in the courtyard instead of retreating to the keep
The plan was to b8 the Night King out so they can kill him and take out the entire army. When the army got close enough to the wall the dragons were supposed to be backup to buy everyone time.
                >Instead of having the Dothraki ride out to their certain death and resurrectio
They show a lot of them come back after the flames go out but yeah I agree with you on this one and the Tarly point. My biggest complaint of the final season aside from them not giving us in depth looks on the characters is the unironic dishonest filmmaking that occurs frequently throughout. The emotional manipulation that occurs through the framing just to pull it away at the last second is something the show never really did before.

More range I'm guessing? I dunno I'm not a medieval war tactics master, but I don't see the big difference. A nitpick like this amounts to the same as something in the "goofs" section on IMDb where they say a character has a piece of fabric thats previously unavailable during that time period.

what’s annoying about shit like this is you can see exactly how anon wants the next several threads to play out. start off gaslighting like this, “uh no I genuinely thought it was well crafted and thought provoking im innocently discussing,” then he progresses to trying to curate the perspective that “only redditors hated the ending.”
eventually anons who have 0 stake, probably didn’t even watch the show, will jump on board because it’s funny and just sperg out on anyone who doesn’t agree with this new b8 take. regardless, there won’t be any actual discussion.
the most this bozo can specifically point to is Theon’s scene, which is quite literally the only part of s8 anyone liked, and this has never been disputed. but somehow that’s his ace in the hole that it was all great and everyone was wrong for thinking otherwise.
yes, Arya going full anime on the NK just uh… because le badass assassin, and because one of the wives of D&D favored her, is totally amazing writing and a perfectly natural climax to the arc.
moronic, but watch it play out this way anyway. all discussion about what was moronic has been had a million times and is in the archive. anon has 0 interest in it, he simply wants to manipulate the “right” take coz it gets him off or whatever.
              it’s all so turesome.

This is another thing we agree on, but mainly because you refuse to partake
                >everyone was wrong for thinking otherwise.
You're only wrong if you're resorting to nitpicks or shit like "it's too dark" as your reasonings. Unlike you I'm fine with simply disagreeing if someone makes a valid point.
                >Arya going full anime on the NK just uh… because le badass assassin
What was so anime about it? As a character she's legit been training to handle a situation like this since the first season.
                >he simply wants to manipulate the “right” take
Truly I just want to discuss it because of the wide difference of opinion I had vs the general reaction of people who watched it live. IDGAF about "takes" I just love the show and dont get intimidated by a difference of opinion. Especially if anons get as defensive as you are for merely suggesting it.

The thing about you, anon, is that you're not looking for a discussion. Every time someone has said something critical of the show you "disagree" by saying you liked it, that's it. It just makes it a boring discussion. You're obviously satisfied with it so why ask around on the difference in opinion when you seem to neither understand nor concede to or even humor a different POV. Now get out of this thread and go watch House of the Dragon

It was over WELL before the last season. I actually thought Jon fricking then killing Dany was a solid ending. It was season 5 where the wheels officially fell off though and there was really no redeeming it. It just got worse in the subsequent seasons. the writing was already inexcusable by S5. Anyone claiming it was S8 that ruined everything is confirmed filtered because S8 was when the roosters finally came home and shit actually happens. The only thing wrong with S8 was the final 30 minutes of the last episode, which felt completely rushed and never stuck the landing. Anyways, the show is still worth watching for the big action pieces, costume design, and comfy medieval fantasy sets. House of the Dragon S1 was pure kino and it feels like they stuck to everything which made GoT good.

I binged it long after it’s peak, and I always thought the fall off memes were over exaggerating. Then you realize half the episodes of the later seasons were just sweeping vistas and establishment shots with minimal, one liner dialogue, and it’s such a stark difference that you would think HBO would learn their lesson, but they keep piling on to the GOT refuse pile.

I feel like s5-6 sort of got a pass because they were still continuing the interesting threads of the first 4 seasons. So even though they were full of dumb shit, you still felt like the essence of the story was there. By the time s7 rolled around, it was pretty much just all moronic fanfic propped up with over the top set pieces.

No. Seasons 1-4 are kino and will remain so but man, I can't bring myself to rewatch it. I've considered rewatching it up until season 4 but it would feel wrong to stop there. For as much as I'd like I cant just ignore the mess that comes after. Hell even for all the problems they have, season 5 and 6 are still fine ish.
