I remember reading an article about a tiny bone spike that was found in an archaeology site that they couldn't figure out what it was, until they posted it to the public and a leatherworker immediately told them it was an awl for punching leather and that people still used bone awls today

Didn't eyeliners come from arab men? It wasn't a feminine thing until it was brought to Europe

Yeah, it reduces glare reflecting off your skin from the sun, it's like a rudimentary form of sunglasses. Same reason footballers wear face paint under their eyes

i dont understand why Cinemaphile overrates this flick, it makes templars look like the aggressors and cartoonishly dishonorable and dumb, with a few "reasonable" liberal-minded crusaders to oppose them, while in reality the muslims enslaved and forcefully converted the whole city, it almost makes a point about the tolerant muslims deserving it and in the end the real point of the movie is just that plus the lowborn non-believing blacksmith was the real knight all along

it literally has scenes designed to make you hate the bad guy crusaders with the french guy who demands to marry the girl who rather wants to be free and frick the foreign twink chad who respects her, he raids innocent unarmed merchants and kills messengers and then you're supposed to be cheer when he shits his pants as he thinks he's about to be beheaded by the honorable muslims who puts him in his place

Saladin freed over half the slaves he took. When you look at what the Crusaders did when they took the city its tame.

the movie is still full of stale stern conservative ugly guy bad tropes and twists random historic figures into evil

crusades were a scam aimed to fix the moronic aspects of feudal society in wesern europe
templars ravaged the local arab christians who had decent lives under muslim rule
and it all amounted to nothing just like Iraq/Afghanistan
the crusades killed more orthodox christians than muslims

history doesn't exist to align with your modern political views (which could be correct, im not saying)

The Islamic knights around that time followed very similar set of rules to their christian counterparts. Read Kitab al-I'tibar - it's a diary of a Syrian noble living there around that time.

Everyone respected baldwin because he wasn’t into schemes, powerplays and shit because he knew he was going to die. he just tried to maintain the status quo and get people what they wanted. Everyone knew that too, that’s why they let him die in peace, even his ennemies.

nope its actually because the holy land was a suzerainty of Byzantium and the Roman Emperor constantly made deals with Saladin. It went to shit when it was evident The Emperor could no longer control the Crusaders

A regular frank woman came to Saladin complaining that her son had been kidnapped, he listened to her pleas and sent someone with her to help track her son.

  19. 6 months ago

Yep. Saladin and Richard the Lionheart also had a deep respect for each other. It would be wrong to characterize them as "friends", but each man knew what the other was going through.
Similarly, the Knights Templar, idiotically characterized as rabid xenophobes in the modern era, were in fact known for their sophisticated understand of the Islamic world. They still, naturally, wanted Christianity to triumph, Jerusalem to be in the hands of the Church, and for the Arabs and all other Muslims to convert. They were not 21st century liberals. But there was a great deal of nuanced understanding on both sides. It's hard for modern people to wrap their heads around, given we live very much in an era of "US GOOD, THEM BAD", where politics are tribal, or worse, team sports. In the time of the Crusades, people understood that others might believe very differently from them, and still possess noble characteristics despite being their enemies. Again, this does not mean they were friends, or saw Islam/Christianity as anything other than a false faith leading to damnation. Paradoxically, the people willing to kill and die to impose their beliefs often showed a greater understanding than is common in our age.
Though of course, there were still plenty of morons, bigots, and cynical hypocrites trying to enrich themselves. The past is a foreign country, but it isn't another world. Its inhabitants were magnificently, terribly, and undeniably human.

        said.
Stallone played a notorious masked character in dredd and I don't think he put on the mask one time in the movie. Contrast that with the fact that most people don't even know gary oldman was in hannibal 2001. Oldman and Norton were also already huge actors during this time.
