Donnie was stuck in a chronological anomaly and survived it by mistake, to fix the timeline he had to die in his bed via the jet engine.

That's its genius: it's just obscure enough to make you think you'll understand if you watch it one more time. So you keep rewatching over and over.

Evil filth. Nothing but an advertisement for smoking and they hurt children making it. Evil israeli shit. But you'll keep spamming it
      have a nice day

There's nothing to "get". It's just an advertisement. It's as "deep" as any other ad. This is like saying you watched a Progressive ad and "didn't get it", what's there to "get"?

Because I'm not a brainwashed moron convinced advertisements are "art"? Yeah, that's very low IQ

          >advertisement for smoking
This is what mental illness looks like. Next thing you know he'll transition

          >seeing things for what they are is INSANE
          >why aren't you brainwashed by israelites like I am?
This "movie" exists solely to promote smoking. It is the only reason it was made

It is a rip-off of slaughterhouse 5, and I kinda liked slaughterhouse 5

      yes it's art

I got more of a Virgin Suicides vibe. It felt like a repudiation of the virgin suicides where everyone in school thinks about the male hero and he's actually a deep heroic character, not selfish.

Did Donnie end up becoming a super hero?

      Anonymous

No, since literally anyone can time travel in the universe of the film. There was nothing unique about Donnie, he's just one of the few people who figured out the cheat code by finding some rare book.
Also you'd think the entire world would be changed if there was just a book out there that genuinely told people how to time travel.
Did literally no government ever look into it? People have been COINTELPRO'd for much less

The book just says what to do to get out of a chronological anomaly, not how to cause it. It's just a curiosity unless you're in one.

i like that scene where the teacher gets fired and she goes outside to yell “FRICK” and then the camera pans over to the fat asian girl just sitting there. she should’ve told her CHUT UP

It's shit, but as someone else said it's shit designed for teens, which is why I and many others liked it as a teen but cringe at it now. Boondocks saints fits that bill well, as do most Tarantino movies.
I will say that, regardless of the target audience, donnie darko has some of the worst dialog ever written. Uhh how exactly does one suck a frick!
Lastly, the soundtrack is excellent. Tears for fears, echo and the Bunnymen, Duran Duran, The Church, all bands I still listen to today that this movie introduced me to

It's not shit. There's some moments where I think the dialog is bad. But that doesn't turn it into a shit movie. The themes, atmosphere and suspensions carries it
