He was just a funny goof but he deserved all the shit he got, then it ends up he is a mentally ill person and it becomes less funny when someone punch him in the face.
He was always a sad funny man and I wish either AT or Fionna and Cake had found a way for Ice King and Simon to coexist. It's the Tuvix situation where one person died to save another.
I know Ice Thing is around but he's completely different and way more feral.
A bit. For the most part he was mainly just a goofy/silly dude but he was always a bit pitiful at times, even before the Simon reveal. He could be an alright dude, too, when people gave him the chance like over here but...not many people were giving him a chance and it was a bit sad now and then.
As others have said, yeah. From his first appearance in season 1 he was always at least a little pitiable. I think the only time he was *just* a bad guy was in the pilot
Even before the reveal it was obvious that he was deranged, it was funnier before we learned that he really is mentally ill but it was pretty clear this guy never had a full grasp on sanity.
Yup, despite the bullshit he pulled, kidnapping the princesses being his most prominent schemes, I still felt bad for the old man. He was clearly nuts but warmed my heart in certain occasions.
I vaguely recall before the Simon reveal them edging towards the idea of Ice King being a sad autist rather than actually evil, so they could occasionally have episodes where you felt bad for him being a moron who just wanted to be happy but was crazy.
He was a goof and wasn't really a threat in the grand scheme of things, they really should have just left his character alone or just toned down his antics and he would have been looked at in the same way doofenshmirtz.
Painting him as mentally ill really puts into perspective the times Finn and Jake kicked his ass.
Fricking nu-writers always pushing their headcannons acting as if tumblr represented the entire fandom.
Long answer, I doodled a little comic in school that ended with ice king being used as a pinata at for, ironically, Marceline's birthday party.
This was several weeks before the episode that revealed his backstory, and 13 year old me felt so shitty afterwards that he threw the notebook away. Even though his friends thought it was funny.
The show always stock to its casual absurdism, it's just that as the show went on, it elevated itself from a pure "lol so random" 2000's comedy to something more engaging
You guys legit act like adventure time, even at its most "plot" heavy didn't still maintain its fun (outside of season 6....)
Lads...is there any more early AT promo art or old material that is rare and/or cool? I'm kinda getting really nostalgic over this show's quality that it had in the beginning. Backgrounds are beautiful, the designs were at their best with thicker outlines, everything was funny and fun with some darkness here and there. Man, this and Bravest Warriors really were the best.
he was extremely pitiable, straight from his first appearance. Only in those early episodes there was this general assumption that all his problems were his own fault, that if he wanted to he could be an alright dude. Like that episode with his bachelor party, where he got on good terms with Finn and Jake only to reveal that he hypnotized his bride-to-be right from the start. What the backstory did was make him a tragic victim of outer circumstances, that no matter what he did he would always be in the claws of the crown.
I actually really liked him, he build himself up enough to be an awkward but decent guy around the show's last years, sad that the subtle character development he went through is barely acknowledged due to the fanbase ether being Simon gays or pathetic finn self inserters who still seeth about bubblegum and Marcy being a thing to this very day, to the point of writing season's 3 to 9 as "woke"
the simon thing was a shocking reveal due to his relationship with marceline and the lore of ooo. ice king was always sympathetic, they very clearly portrayed him as having something wrong with him rather than being pure evil

Yeah, he was cute
No, I hate that bullshit. Just have a fricking antagonist, I don't need none of that past horse shit.
You sound like a huge philostine
A little like in the one where he’s a prisoner.
Yes

Mostly though, he was just a funny haha man.
No

Needed more episodes with him and Marcy

Of course, he was always lonely af and just tried to date princesses, very relatable
I don’t know how you couldn’t feel for him when he said maybe we could all learn something from those sandwiches.

Short answer, picrel.

Show us the picture?
>ice king being used as a pinata at for, ironically, Marceline's birthday party.
Lol. That would probably make her cry in canon.
If it makes you feel better, chances are Pendelton Ward would have done something like that had the show sticked to the silliness from the start
The show always stock to its casual absurdism, it's just that as the show went on, it elevated itself from a pure "lol so random" 2000's comedy to something more engaging

I'm a guy. Of course I did.
The backstory takes away from the character. I'd rather he was just a crazy wizard and that the vampire wasn't related to him.
It's as if they turned dumb theories into the actual plot.
I think we all do feel bad for the old guy here.

Ice King is still here, right?
Is it bad that I find it adds some level of dark comedy knowing his backstory?

The reveal makes's his relationship with Marceline extra sad, like someone taking care of their dad with alzheimer's
Yeah. It is very sad indeed.
Adventure Time was only good when it was just a silly cartoon. Adding all that unnecessary lore and sad backstories makes it lame and boring.
