I have never liked autobiographical comics written by women.

      Anonymous

I've heard it's gotten rave reviews but I'm so very tired of autobiographical "graphic novels", and of the cult of mental health specifically. I like authors who understand their work is autobiographical whether they want it to be or not, and simply present well constructed fictional narratives that try to find a common ground with their audience as they naturally present ideas, values and experiences rather than the narrative equivalent of trapping you in a pub booth to tell you their life story.

It's absolutely worthwhile to get to known who and what people are, but the very worst way to go about it is by them straight out telling you.

I've read Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, and seeing as how this 'woman's autobiographical comic' has become a whole genre after that, I'll just assume they're all like Fun Home

They're great at it, but the American industry strong arms them until they abandon ship. Only shit that's part of the big machine (big two capeshit) or is approved by academia and the vocal leftist readership (autobioslop) gets through.

white comics have no rhythm. white comics are wannabe cinema. manga on the other hand is more influenced by photography and therefore has a better sense of encapsulating atmosphere. manga flirts with the reader's sense of time. white comics bore you with a standard play-by-play panel motion that feels like looking at a storyboard for a movie

I never had a problem with either manga or comics, unless they're outright bad in some way.

I'll look up the Drescher stuff when I have the time, but frankly most stuff is gonna be better than Bechdel moaning about how shitty her dad was

                Anonymous

if her dad was so "shitty" why did she then would dress just like him and take photos imitating photos of him standing in the same spot in their old house? I interpret that as having some type of deep association with her father. He was secretly gay and a paedo after all.
besides Drescher, look up Renee French's old stuff, it will make you shiver, it does me.

I did say seems. I just googled up a random reading list and the second and third ones were autobiographies. It was a decent sized list, but that was some of the first things I saw.

I'm just starting to do the same and so far it just seems like another exercise in postmodern narcissism. I was kind of hoping everyone would get over this kind of stuff after Bo Burnham's Inside came out but maybe that's me being less sympathetic to kids as I get older. Good art though, hope the creator is ok.

We all relate to different things in different ways.
I think his answer is valid, even if you disagree with his implied stance.

Yeah, I avoid autobios written by women altogether. Even when they have something to tell, they don't tell it all that well.
I'll stick to Moomin and comics like A Frog in the Fall when it comes to female comic writers.

Can you recommend anything besides Sterte and Jansson?

i mean he's a loser and she's slightly less a loser. it's still a world of difference between them.

Yeah but she's actually believable whereas anon's meme is pretty absurd.

It's not believable that he's unsuccessful, unattractive, has no close friends, doesn't get along with his family and is a virgin? Seems pretty normal.

          >t. Zoe
She's pretty cute. The only ugly thing in her are her ears, which she promptly hides in the comic.

    >auto-bio-graphic-novel by Zoe Thorogood

    SO BORING

By the title I was sure it was a Pulpy adventure about an adventurer stuck in a Hollow Earth setting, or navigating across Earth's Nucleos with a ship.

Truly dissapointed to see no one discuss the actual contents of the comic. What happened to Cinemaphile

    The art is fantastic
Despite being such raw day to day stuff there was clearly some story structure in it (like it was all written at the end of it all not a day to day rereading of some diary or someshit).
I'm curious if she had killed herself near the end when the book was finished if Image would have had the balls to publish it still.

The "relatable" page was pretty great.
Was in a comic bookclub that did this one month, and always thought of that every time someone's review said "relatable".

I don't care for stories about mental health anymore, it's been so diluted and sanitised and anything outside of White Woman Depression is ignored.
Is this worth reading outside of that?
