        Very much this.
The entire dopey story careens along asking you to accept magic-science less plausible than old Twilight Zone episodes. And it just keeps getting dopier and less plausible, til it reaches Harry Potter with Chinks.

This is always the way of telling someone is a literaturelet. Classic sci-fi does not give a shit about characterization because it's about larger concepts than personal drama. The characters are only there to be a lens for the sci-fi stuff going on.

Tries to be hard scifi, but makes up shit all the time and follows inane premises.

Sure. It's made for the masses but for a netflix thing it's really ok. Only the lines the OP pointed really made me roll my eyes.

Realize that while you feel superior to these people, if you really were superior you would be a positive influence on those people's lives, instead of them being a negative influence on your life repeatedly across time and space.
If you really believe you have the capacity to influence those people, then set a good example for us to follow. If you believe it's not in your power, and you give it this much more focus than it merits, then read below:

By emotionally engaging with their constructed reality and feeding it energy; it is us the people who hate and complain and buy into that reality, who keep it alive in a feedback cycle

yes but let's ask the real questions

don't get so sidetracked by the daily cultural angst; it is not hard to imagine that a production of this size doesn't get made today without that level of current-day cultural manipulation
That's day-to-day minutiae and circus compared to the larger scale, interesting realities that are before us.

When reading or watching about your favorite historical era or figure(s) -- aside from when emotionally trying to connect to their situation in the storytelling, how much importance do you place on whatever political and social campaigns were going on at the time?

The sense of importance and urgency and angst that we place when learning about past times (very little urgency, most likely)--
THAT is the level of urgency that we all need to collectively place on the daily manipulations like the one that prompted you to make this thread

Im not saying to not acknowledge it, and to not take action.
Absolutely, call them out on their bullshit if/when it's in your power and move on if possible. Stewing in mindrot and distrust makes us all worse

We all need to be thinking towards a more trust oriented, collaborative future (without being naive and opening up oneself for exploitation out of either a savior complex, self-hatred, or again naively thinking that truly evil people are not out there in large scale, and they don't always look ugly or scary, in fact, often the opposite)

Even you the person reading just thinking about it for 3 seconds is a collective step forward even if it doesn't feel that way. This is an opinion, but to me it seems that compound investing is very effective but our human mind&brains dislike it or can't easily intuit it

Hope you're all having a wonderful day, help me think of how to condense this half-schizo message
Keep calling out the bullshit but dont get tilted by it cause there are bigger things to worry about right now

you truly never know who's lurking; only the false impression you get from the vocal minority

the irony of you (and also you reading) dismissing any person/idea connected to reddit, is that in fact you have been directly (and unknowingly, apparently) influenced by people who predate both of these places, into spouting exactly the same kneejerk response you have now

I dont care who you are, but I do care about you regardless.
Nobody wants terrible things to happen (except a very tiny sociopathic or megalomanic few).
Even many of the tiny few are usually horrified by terrible things (but we have to acknowledge irredeemable people exist)

              But still:
Terrible things do happen, don't they?

They've happened in my life, they've happened in your life (or will happen, I'm sorry anon), it happens to even the most rich and powerful or anyone you might hate the most; "time heals all wounds" (or at least makes some types of pains hurts less)
the part they leave out is also "time destroys everything you love"

Philosophy aside, the reality is this:
Terrible things that are within human action to influence, those things happen because me, you, them, us -- we all collectively decide to make it happen. Not just "allow it" to happen, no. We make it happen as humanity. By throwing our hands up and not thinking a better way out.
It's not just some big bad shady people allow it to happen. yes that's part of it

              >b-b-but I'm good! and I have zero influence in the world, they started it!
              "No!"
We don't have that luxury anymore now that we're so interconnected.
              One solution is this:
I dont care who you are, but I do care about you regardless.

I'll explain later if I feel like it, how this relates to the 'reddit is cringe' response
Needed to get the importance things out first

think bigger scale, there are people from all walks of life who happened to be at the inception of both Cinemaphile and reddit and many other forgottens and have through aged, developed broader perspective or influence
you truly never know who's lurking; only the false impression you get from the vocal minority

              It's futile to resist
Love of humanity is a more powerful force than apathy of the current day; your biological mechanism is proof of it, every night you go to sleep is proof of it
How haven't we realized that life wants to grow bigger; and thinking is a dimension involved in that growth?
The growing force in the universe, which in humans, is intuited through love; that force is indifferent to apathy, and the opposite of indifference is love

              simpler explanation:
              >reddit spacing
              >cringe
that type of response is symptomatic of a growing pains (not apathy) in humanity or whatever comes after [I am neither anti-human nor pro-transhumanism]
again, I don't care who those individual posters are but I do care about them

Their resistance comes out of love and concern, to which I show love back
What I'm saying falls on deaf ears to them, as does any multi-layered message

I don't really see the contradiction in the Fermi paradox. The universe is a big place, the galaxy is a big place. There is very likely intelligent life in our galaxy, but it's very very far away (from our vantage point), and any signal that we send will be diffuse and impossible to detect once it gets even remotely outside our local neighborhood. Additionally, until we discover a way to bridge the unfathomable distances between stars, i don't see us going anywhere anytime soon. And if that is indeed the case, I don't honestly see other species doing the same. I think the reality is that there are potentially hundreds or thousands of species in our galaxy, hanging out in their local nationhood. Maybe some day we will obtain some evidence that they are there, and that would certainly be cool, but we won't be able to do much with them.

There may be super advanced, galaxy spanning aliens out there somewhere, but then the problem of distances rears its ugly head, even if you figure out intergalatic travel. I dunno, i just think there are really massive technical and logistical problems between covering the kind of distance that the universe deals with.

The contradiction with Fermi is that mega structures should be visible if a civ has even slightly advanced tech. There's no reason NOT to build dyson spheres. Even if everyone sticks to their own region, you'd see that kind of shit even with modern telescopes.

more than half of the characters lack an actual purpose and almost every romantic relationship is meaningless. I haven't read the source material but it's painfully obvious what has been tacked on as an afterthought and what is source material.

You need to stop swallowing mainstream propaganda and wrinkle your brain a bit.

                > why does China allow criticizing their revolutionaries now
Because they're all dead. Soviets did the same after Stalin died. Allowing the criticism of the past deflects from the failures of the present. What is really not allowed to criticize is the current CCP and to say things like the leaders are corrupt or stupid. Just like in the west you can't talk badly about a certain tribe and all the shit they do, to talk about their influence in western governments and corporations, but its fine to shit on everyone and everything else.

                > that is the fundamental basis of their government
It is just the founding myth, but not the fundamental basis of their government. The fundamental basis of their government is that the standards of living have massively increased in the past few decades and they're now a world power, and the population believe their authoritarian system of government is superior to the west, even if not perfect.

                > it will gradually lead to degeneration and collapse
They're not moronic. Just like Russia they still believe in strong technocratic government and know western "democracy" is a scam. They're not gonna become morons just because their revolution was a scam too.

Just watch the original chinese version, it's one of the most based things I've seen in a long time. Doesn't make up bullshit just tells the original story and has some really interesting characters. It doesn't waste hours on interpersonal drama it just tells the story and lets you figure it out as you go along. The only downside is some poor cgi in VR scenes and the translation is a bit rough but they are minor issues compared to the nigflix trainwreck.

because the show is clearly working towards the long game. They don't want to introduce new characters in future seasons, so Wade was introduced in the first and they have to establish that he's an butthole willing to kill kids. The whole thing is stupid but to get worked up that they put a community on the boat and cry because it's not like that in the books is bonkers to me.

because they wanted to destroy the entire story of ETO. yeah, I get that. But that one scene specifically doesn't change anything. Having the kids and families there doesn't change anything. The show already had ruined the whole ETO story line by then. What specifically do you object to that it wasn't just sailors and mercs?

Well in that sense yes... the ETO story had already been butchered before that scene. In that scene it was just for extra shock value and so blowjoblips can call Wade a fascist and throw a tantrum. This is from the makers of GOT after all.

I read them you mongoloid. The book is obviously critical of the cultural revolution but it doesn't criticize contemporary China, if anything the majority of the book plots glorifies a technocratic ruthless government and shits on democracy as weak. However this Netflix slop goes out of its way to shit on everything Chinese because its made by ameriburgers and there's a fricking cold war going on in case you haven't noticed. When this show was first anounced literally everything was about how fricking brave they were for showing the struggle session scene, which was CENSORED in china!!!1!

Also the TV show didn't want to show an eco-terrorist anti-human sociopath because ecologism is a fricking religion for the Netflix audience and showing it in any potential negative light would be like pandering to rightwingers in their delusional minds. My comment had nothing to do with the way the books treat the subject.

            Now frick off.

I thought it's alright. At first I was fuming how they split one character into four, but they did a good job of joining/blending arcs and characters. Same with taking from World's End into first season for the grand surprise if they ever get a third season, or maybe they'll cram two books into one. What I don't get is how did this cost 300m when it's onwards when crazy space shit happens that'll need expensive sets and/or cgi, while here there was only the ship, sophon assembly, fleet start and I guess VR. It's probably going to die here because I doubt they'll get more cash.

Haven't read any of the threads including this one. Only 4 eps in. I've also never read the books. My $0.02...

It's a phenomenal sci-fi by Netflix standards, but that qualifier matters. The CGI is so cheaply done it hurts this show, and I'm not someone who typically cares about lesser quality CGI. It really does hurt this show tho. Also, knowing nothing about the book, I hate that all the chars are 420 BLAZE IT gayIT chars. The world's foremost physicists aren't like this, and while accurately portraying would make for a boring show, there has to be a comfy median.

7/10 I like it but why did Netflix cheap out on the CGI so hard?

The whole thing is on youtube, but you can find it on any torrent site as well. It's just called 3 body. If you need "drama" and GRAPHICS to be engaged don't bother. It's a slow story about smart people having conversations about science trying to figure things out.
But it's a thousand times better than any western slop to come out in the last 5 years. Great characters and people actually acting like real human beings instead of walking quip machines.

I think it was decent. Obviously has a lot of cringe Netflixisms (diversifying the cast, "strong women", needless insertions of modern politics), but I think many of the other changes were perfectly fine--even good.

Making Thomas Wade a much more prominent character was great. Making all the main characters a group of friends--maybe a bit implausible, but it enables a lot of nice scenes and lets them use dialogue to tell the story. A truly faithful adaption here would have pretty much none of the main characters talking to one another. Bringing forward some Dark Forest/Death's End plotlines was also totally fine, I think the show had very good pacing.

The only big mistake was making Augustina so fricking horrible. God, she's a braindead obnoxious moralist in every scene. Absolutely horrible.

The problem isn’t projecting human values, it’s assuming technological explosion and subsequent scarcity of resources. There’s no current suggestion that miracles like strong force manipulation, space warping, or dimensional compression are possible, and travel will probably be limited by the speed of light between very distant solar systems. Hence there is very little motivation to attack and destroy all other possible alien civilizations. Game theory suggests that such an aggressive posture would backfire in the long run.

            >Game theory suggests that such an aggressive posture would backfire in the long run.
Why? Eliminating players early is a winning strategy where goal is survival.

Because, unless you are one of the very first species, it is unlikely that you will be advanced enough to threaten the others. Attacking everyone at once will lead to your extermination. And if the very first species decided that omnixenocide was best, why are we even here? They’ve had millions if not billions of years to map the entire galaxy.

The most plausible solutions to the Fermi paradox are:

              1. Intelligent life is very rare / we are the first.
              2. Alien civilizations don’t bother to expand physically.
              3. The Prime Directive is real (the silliest one but plausible if you think UFOs are aliens).

                Anonymous

And now you're talking from a human point of view, that is a young civilization. Assuming space is millions of years old and that in meantime there were others they could have seen what happens when one solar system tried to expand. It might have been interstellar nukes, dogfights in orbits, subjugation on land, many losses, comebacks, pleas, truces, betrayals. Ultimately they decided to just frick it and nuke you if you even start to pose a threat. It makes even more sense in the dimension shattering tech because far away civilizations could have had their own galaxy wide wars and end up with same idea. If you want to go out and say "Hey we're not that bad!" you get blasted because frick you we've heard that before.
