Silver Age Superman only could turn coal into gem (as any other respectable chud). And Wonder Woman by then still couldn't fly like in DCAU, only soar through air like through water or go upstream of a waterfall.

Going to blow your mind, but that's like issue 1 or 2 of Wonder Woman.
That ain't Silver Age, that's Golden Age. Honestly Silver Age was mid in comparison, though I did like Gloop and that one issue where Diana freaks the frick out from overwork.
No, that's definitely Robert Kanigher scripting. His broken rhythm and sentence fragments are very recognizable. It's not HG Peters art, either. I'd guess it's Ross Andru and Mike Esposito from the early stages where they were blanded down to a more sedate house style than their later art, The final clue is the one panel that shows Wonder Woman's laced up sandals rather than the flared top boots she wore in the Golden Age,
It was from WONDER WOMAN# 98, 1958... well after the Barry Allen Flash launched the Silver Age,
Alright. I'm moronic. Could have sworn Diana did something with a penny in Marston's day, but it looks like it's my mind that's blown today.
Oh well, no big deal. We're just fans yakking on an ephemeral message board.
It isn't. All Golden Age is H G Peter. It is significant by Hyppolita hair color change. Originally she was 1:1 like Diana but Silver Age which started with Ross is her as blonde. Silver Age started just as G Peter died, though one could argue it was really inter period after Marston died, same way it was inter period when Don Cameron and then Bill Finger wrote Superman's origin and people of Krypton were no longer powerful on their planet and yet yellow sun still wasn't established.
Nothing much comes close to it. But yeah, compared to modern.
>it's Ross Andru
Correct, and dubs of truth confirmed. Sneed Moultoned. Keyed and locked.
What exactly
You've got a point. Silver Age and Golden Age were fan terms made up after the fact. It's not like Congress passed legislation defining them. And, looking back, it's funny how short a period there was between the end of the Golden Age (maybe the last super-hero issue of ALL-STAR COMICS or MARVEL FAMILY?) and the debut of the Barry Allen Flash. There wasn't a twenty year gap, after all.
No, it was term supported by DC/Kanigher/Schwartz -self see , as early as 1966 if not even earlier.
That was way after the fact. Early 1961 issues of Jerry Bails' and Roy Thomas' ALTER EGO used Golden Age and Silver Age terms, The names seem to have just sprung up among collectors trading back issues.
From Wiki:
The first recorded use of the term "Golden Age" pertaining to comics was by Richard A. Lupoff in an article, "Re-Birth", published in issue one of the fanzine Comic Art in April 1960
>Re-Birth
huh
Looking over old issues, I'm surprised that HG Peter was drawing this comic right up into 1958. He must have been in his late 70s by then.
He was almost 80. Someone in a thread yesterday said he looked like a 19th century relic, and he was
Most comic book artists at the time were young and mostly guys trying to work their way up to bigger money in strips- it's interesting that Peters ended up on Wonder Woman
after some 40+ years as an illustrator. It definitely gave the book a very different quality.
Glad we're having these daily threads, they're short and not too many posters but it beats the usual "Why is Wonder Woman popular, no I refuse to read any comics before 1995, Yes I only know her from half-remembered episodes of the DCAU, the movies, and Mortal Kombat DC edition. "
what issue was the overwork?
The only thing I am certain of was that it was in a DC Showcase and was a Bob Kanigher's, but the writing had a really different energy to it. Might have been one where Elizabeth and Olive ghost wrote for Kanigher using Marston's notes.
More behind the scenes stuff about ghost writers and so forth. Love it!
If you ever watch the movie Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, there's a scene that basically shows the production of WW being run like a studio. Which I doubt was entirely true, but it is known Marston did have ghost writers(I think Kanigher began as one), but I don't think the artwork was a studio thing. Wouldn't be surprised if Peters kept assistants or proteges to help out, especially towards the end.
That said I wasn't fond of how the movie just doesn't mention Peters at all- I get that the movie is more about Marston's relationship but still
Peter, not Peters. Like Reeve not Reeves
And yeah, it is such fricking injustice that Bill Finger finally got recognition but Top G Peter didn't. Still a shit fricking company with 0 respect to OGs or just talent. Will rather mourn Stan Lee (who Is great, but fricking other company)
Without Peter it will be just a concept nobody would give a shit about
Yeah I think people neglect how crucial the Srt was to go if WW this whimsical, storybook feel. I think that’s largely why it succeeded so well with girls
In general artists carry at least half of weight
>Did you know in the silver age characters just did absolute asspull shit all the time?
Why yes, I did.
we need more modern superhero comics where they do crazy shit like this
Batman once survived falling from the moon to Earth by huffing his own shorts . in nothing but a batsuit.
Why say something so obviously false?
Shoot, I meant this guy
Oh yeah . I often wonder that myself.
Marston kicked it in 1947. Which is close to the Silver Age, but is still strictly speaking in the Golden Age. Kanigher himself lampshades this fact in the issue where he erases his contributions to Diana's cast from existence with protestors demanding the return of the Golden Age Wonder Woman.
Reading classic WW it was interesting to me to know these terms were in effect so early.
People like to say it was all just kids reading this before the 80's but you already see zines happening in the 60's before Marvel really went full swing, and before the adam West Batman show.
It's safe to say that the majority of comic book fans were pre-puberty kids. During WW II, lots of American servicemen read comics because they were disposable and quick to read. Of course, from the start there were a few adults who collected comic books but they were few in number and far between. Around 1960, you started to see fanzines like Jerry Bails' ALTER EGO turn up in advertisements in the comics themselves. By the mid-60s, though, high school and college age readers were becoming much more numerous.
Predicted smart watch and then
Dick Tracy did that much earlier.
Yep, he had two-way wrist radios and then wrist TVs first. And the art always clearly labelled them as such.
With screen?
I didn't even know her gauntlets were high tech in Silver Age.
Also there's really strange switch/pause with Golden Age Wonder Woman returning (black lips, black haired Hyppolita) and then back.
are panels missing here? The narration just sort of acts like it is leading to another sentence but the next panel is saying something entirely different
This is stupid though, every superhero that can't fly shouldn't be called a superhero. There's nothing super about being stuck to the ground
Many thousands of hours have been lost arguing over the definition of "super-hero." It's a black hole for your time. You'd have better luck deciding the difference between fantasy and science fiction.
pedos who keep spamming that DCAU WW moment. I have some good news for you, enjoy while day of the rope is coming
Note : she only kissed Gargoyle to save Steve. It is very bizzare issue. Damn, Steve Trevor is total fricking chad for being damsel in distress AND fricking around with Her feelings or just being moronic himbo, I don't know
For some reason Silver Age Wonder Woman losing her powers for 24 hours on June 19th
Her powers including robot plane controls
(she bested 2/3 of that contest without them, for context)
Interesting that in Wonder Woman 5 they changed her title card from As strong and As fast as Herc/Merc to STRONGER and FASTER/SWIFTER than
thought it is Silver Age but no, GA too
Also gotta love OG racism!
>the dwarfs
are japanese shorter than chinese?
Why our Chinese allies are damn near european stock!
>Captain Hideo
Oh no no no
Hypercrisis strikes again?
Little bit of sexism, she had to be stronger and faster than the males. In a Silver Age origin story. Hercules and Mercury gave the baby Diana strength and speed greater than their own. This made zero sense to me. How could they do this? You'd think they'd give themselves increased powers if they could.
Men like and cherish women even if men also want to subdue and trick them like Herc did.
Maybe, I dunno.
Maybe it works just like with Wizard Shazam.
Also real life "logical" comparison: a guy can make his car or computer faster and better, but will never match it.
I Dunno.
But yeah, weird.
I thought change was Silver Age but no, already under "Chuck"
"Men" don't want to subdue and trick women, any more than "Women" want to manipulate and exploit men. Some do, most don't.
Yeah, but I was trying to rationalize it from WW's specific version of Hercules.
Fair enough! I missed that reference,
Imagine a Justice Society meeting in 1942. Hawkman gives a stirring speech about democracy and freedom. Wonder Woman comes from a monarchy with an immortal queen and she herself is the only princess. She gives a lecture on how happiness is to be found through complete submission to loving authority.
Hawkman clears his throat, looks embarrassed and changes the subject, "So, about Solomon Grundy,..."
Hahaha
Also all them amazons are basically sexy androids. I thought only Diana was made, but no, All of them were made not born.
"You will be much happier once you're BRAINWASHED and my obedient slave! Nyah-hah-hah!"
"I'm sorry I tried to think for myself! I was wrong! Take away my freedom, I insist!"
I wish I was raped by Giganta.... In accordance to loving authority ofc.
Frick the haters. Silver Age WW was kino.
Bronze Age stuff was good too.
"What the frick, lady? I ain't putting that on!"
And Morronson gays will defend this.
Lotta self-hating masochists out there. One strip club I used to go had a guy who came in sometime with clothesline to be tied up extra tight with. The girls said, "Sure, it'll cost extra.:
I never noticed that Lois Lane in All-Star Superman comics (but not in cartoon) is actually non-white. Until recently.
She's not? What is she supposed to be?
Mixed at minimum, blacku or something like that. Notice her brown eyes and Rihanna like nose and eyes set
>Notice her brown eyes
Lots of white people have those
>Rihanna like nose and eyes set
I might just chalk this up to how Quitely draws.
Gene Colan era of WW was pretty good. It deserves a TPB at the very least.
But TPB that will print it in the way it was printed instead of over bright dogshit
Does any DC / Marvel ever do proper coloring in their reprints?
They really just need to make the lettering more clear in reprints of old comics
They unironically just need to scan original copies and print them on paper.
Green Lantern to Dr Fate: "Are you sure it's a good idea to have her on the team?"
"Come on, Starman, be a sport."
"No, Wonder Woman, I don't WANT to be tied up. Let's catch those Axis spies."
Not even a crime-fighting exploit, just a Saturday night date.
Per Joye (first actual woman that was writing WW comics) and Bob Amazons had shrink ray machine.
Imagine loving authority
Brainwashing people is the way to peace. Lobotomies prevent war.
It's not lobotomy though. It's actually good non moronic and completely reversible brainwashing
Maybe I was thinking of Doc Savage. He used to operate on criminals' brains, destroy their memories and "re-educate" them into good citizens,
yah
