Aesthetics and the violence, plus I still played video games at the time and self-inserted as the character taking part in a revenge tale. Rewatching it in my 30s, and after watching Thief, I hated the protagonist for being completely devoid of any character and behaving like a moron. When Oscar Isaac's character shows up it's like a breath of fresh air because despite him being somewhat of a scumbag he at least has a character. There are also a ton of small problems through out that add up to the movie being a total mess. For example: Brian Cranston's character talking about how the racecar they bought still has plenty of tread on its tires, which is a moronic thing to say because they replace tires on racecars constantly during a race, something his character would know and would never say. The violence is probably the best part with how it is executed, but that's not remotely enough to keep me interested in a movie.
Well I agree on both counts. I like the aesthetics and violence and feel the character was empty. I heard so many good things about the movie, but it turned out to be just okay and yet another example of wasted potential.

I watched Drive for the first time fairly recently. I found it pretty boring with only two good scenes - the first getaway and the pawnshop robbery. Imagine my surprise to watch Thief later and find out that one of two good scenes in Drive was practically a shot for shot remake. Hugely overrated film.
Drive is a synthwave aesthetic/playlist youtube video presented in the form of a movie. Like everything Hollywood produces, it's just an attempt to leech off an existing community of consumers by providing all the cliches and reference-points of a brand they are already familiar with.
