It was not just undermarketed, it was terribly marketed, they added "3D" to the title which made it seem like a shitty low effort flick cashing in on the gimmick

Yeah but the timing of two movies in this specific and relatively niche genre both getting made at the same time, by PUUUURE coincidence seems a bit hard to believe. At least in this case it isn't as bad as two animated movies about ants at the same time.
Who cares? Studios rip each other off every day. It doesnt make either a bad movie. Dredd is better since I like the dredd comics and the raid is basically a 2 hour fight scene with no plot aside from some swat dudes getting rekt. which is why I love it too

Even with the similarity of law enforcement trapped in a apartment building ran by the bad guy I still think the settings (future dystopian cyber punk vs modern day detroit) makes them different enough.

this was when 3d was just in its infancy. So they called it Dredd 3d and put off a lot of people because they didn't care about 3d or want 3d, or want to put on glasses.
I remember this coming out and thinking i can't be arsed to trek to a cinema to watch this in 3d. i downloaded it and thought i would have to get some 3d glasses. Instead, it was just 2d normal. But for everyone it was just a lot of confusion. Also the teaser trailer was terrible it was all the slow mo drug stuff which made you think frick what is this 3d shit. Suffice to say no one watched.

Judge Dredd captured the spirit of the comic better because it is campy as frick. But Dredd was a a more faithful adaption to the lore
It lost some of its box office momentum because The Raid stole the premise and beat it to market, but it was one of the few examples of post avatar 3D actually working.

It's a real pickle. The comics balance the humour and wackiness with over the top violence. Stallone 's Dredd has is whimsical and Urban's Dredd has the gore.
The fact that activists are attempting to write into lore that this movie ripped off an Indonesian action flick when Dredd started production a few months earlier tells you everything you need to know. This movie is pure male energy. It threatens the troons. It really is that simple. Also, Jackie Chan already ripped his way through office blocks in at least three movies that predate it.
