It is possible, but I think he would've abstracted soon either way.
Judging by the way the characters speak of him, Kaufmo is characterized by two elements: his obsession with finding an exit, and his hyper-sensitivity. It's implied that he would get angry if you didn't laugh at his jokes (or if he felt that you only laughed out of obligation). He is never regarded with fondness, only with bitterness.
the fact his name's spelled with a K and an F has me thinking he's a The Metamorphosis reference, in that his existence within the circus was almost entirely one-way to the benefit of everyone but himself, and then he wakes up to find himself transformed into uselessness to those around him, who then discard him.

Jax might have some role in it, too. But it seems like there was some kind of larger negligence at play.
Kaufmo abstracted because he got obsessed with finding the exit from the circus and thought Caine was lying to him, which made him fell into despair and abstract. A quick look at his room will tell you that.

It's pretty clear that aside from Kinger and Jax, the rest of the crew was aware he had some underlying and growing mental issues.

It sounds like he didn't just want to be funny, he NEEDED to be funny. Enough that two characters brought it up in completely separate dialogues.

Like Gangle would be the most obvious case with her ability to emote being tied to the masks, but Jax being an butthole trickster, Kaufmo trying to play the clown and Ragatha being caring might be linked to their appearances rather than who they were.
Zooble seems to escape it by being so apathetic about the Circus and Kinger is too scatterbrained for it to affect him either.
And Pomni's too new, I expect if this theory is true she won't change much if at all, probably being more set on escape or changing the group's circumstances.
Poor Gangle is the most mindbroken of them all.
Maybe it's the other way around, their appearance is based on their personality before they were digitized. Kaufmo was always the kind of guy that covered up pain with jokes and needed people to think he was funny, so the circus made him a clown. Jax was already a smug, slippery butthole who ran around playing tricks on people so the circus made him a rabbit with a permanent smirk. I'm not sure how that fits with Pomni being a jester though, since she really doesn't seem to fit the role aside from generally being the butt of some jokes. She's way too anxious and self-conscious to be a capital-F Fool.

this is the one, everyone gets a twisted ironic version of their self-image. Gangle was BPD or something, so the circus made her unable to feel certain emotions without physically switching her face. Zooble was unsure of their identity so they're just a jumble of blocks that can be rearranged. Kinger's probably lost everything of his original self by this point, but maybe he was a narcissist?

I figure Gangle's issue is more that she keeps trying to pretend she's happy no matter what she actually feels. She seems a bit spineless and easily influenced or lead around, so she's probably not very used to standing up for herself or prioritizing her own needs, which is why her body is literally a light piece of cloth. And she didn't manually switch out the smiling mask for the crying one when it got broken, she was already wearing the tragedy mask under the comedy mask. I bet she thinks she can't be happy without the comedy mask because the only way she knows how to be "happy" is to lie to herself and others.
Zooble I think you're right about. Someone who has no idea what the frick they're about or who they want to be, so they become a random ass jumble of shapes.
Ragatha seems like one of those people that is way way too self-sacrificing, I bet she has real issues seeing herself as having inherent worth beyond being nice and helping people. So she became a worn down patchwork replica of a real girl who only exists for others to play with and throw aside once they're no longer useful.
Jax probably sees himself as one of those aloof, smart, and cynical types, and doesn't seem interested in caring about others or showing emotions other than smug amusement , so he became some smirking Brer Rabbit looking motherfricker.
Frick only knows what King's original deal was though, or if there's anything left of that part of him by this point.
Kinger was hubristic but it got beaten out of him.

That does seem the most natural fit what with him literally being a King chess piece but there's definitely a few other directions you could go with that symbolism, and since we have no idea what King was originally like when he arrived in the circus there's no real way to tell.
If it was pride or hubris it's absolutely gone by now. He's nothing but friendly and accommodating when he's not being crazy.

I thought the obvious implication was that the straw that broke the camel's back for Kaufmo was seeing the fake exit that Caine built. For the first time since arriving in the Circus, he knows that an exit exists! And not a single other person believes him, but he saw it, it was there! And then it disappears in front of him and he has no idea what to do or how to find it again, so he breaks down, writes the word 'exit' all over the walls and abstracts.
If anything, Caine is the one that pushed him to far by not understanding how important an exit is; which is very in character.
They're playing Jax off as this cool aloof character who has just accepted his fate and is trying to make things fun like its a dull workplace.
I want the reveal that he's been an NPC the whole time.
