            >It's because that's where the Black mermaids live
There were white mermaids too, King Triton is white

That the mermaids look like the various human subspecies attached to a fish implies that there was NOT a sea monkey that migrated around and convergently evolved into human lookalikes. Especially since the selection pressures of the ocean are different than on land and would express a different phenotype
Either every human subspecies conveniently diverged it's own little branch of mermaids, or there's a single mermaid group that branched off an established human subspecies. We will assume they are still closely related enough to produce fertile offspring. This group migrated around the coasts and land bridges and got regular injections of new genes from the nearby human populations. Although considering there are male mermaids, the amount of hapas compared to the overall population should be low
So the most likely explanation is that Ariel's mom was raped by an escaped black slave or was into some kinky stuff and king triton let it slide because he had 8 other wives securing his bloodline

        Anonymous

I think he's saying that there's no purpose for it other than propaganda. Hercules was an original film and decided on a specific theme for their songs, and they matched it. It's like the Labyrinth, they hired a black choreographer and black backing singers to make it have a little more funk, and it worked because they had a purpose. Or Luke Cage, they had black musicians regularly playing songs, and it worked because it fit the objective.

But when a film just goes "let's change an existing character for no reason at all", it's clearly for an agenda and not a creative decision.

So should Turks in Izmir or Istanbul claim Ancient Greek history for themselves? Should Persians claim to be totally ethnically pure Zoroastrians? Should Americans claim to be Native Americans or something? "History" is only relevant in so far as it has coherence and linearity to the "now" of a nation, Ancient Greece has had less influence on Greek today than the Ottoman Empire, and Greeks obviously are not Ottoman vassals as a culture, they are today a Balkan Christian nation, very similar to Macedonia and Bulgaria
It would be as ridiculous for a Greek to go "WE WUZ PLATO" as it would be for a Bulgarian to go "WE WUZ STEPPE KHANS"

Some might say the Greek choirs are the ancestors of the Gospel ones, so it's not that farfetched.

Amen. I dig the Titans designs as elements/forces of nature.

All the gods have unusual skin colors as a stylistic choice in that movie, so it's still ambiguous enough to just dismiss it on those grounds. Although it's clear the animators snuck in a bit of blackwashing underscored by their gospel songs, they've basically got plausible deniability - as opposed to shoving it into your face and demanding that you like it as with TLM.

I take it that's Demeter besides Athena and Helios behind Aphrodite, but who are the bearded guy behind Ares and the purple-skinned blonde lady?

Haephestus or whatever it's his english name. The blonde lady is of course Aphrodite.

Nah, Aphrodite is in the foreground, between Ares and Dionysus.

Apparently that lady is supposed to be Persephone

Thanks, that's interesting. If she's Persephone, she should have tried to reason her husband. But this is a Disney movie where Zeus and Hera are happily married, so I don't expect it to be mythology-accurate.

Supposedly Persephone was meant to have a big role in the movie before the idea was scrapped and all that remains is her presence in a few background shots.

Man, they blew up on that, it'd have been a great idea to have Persephone either following HAdes in her plans or trying to tardwrangle him.

I wonder how Disney has been treating Hades after James Woods unrelenting basedness
Anyone else they'd just recast and insist whoever is "the real" Hades, but he gave so much personality to the character they changed it to fit him
He also really, really liked voicing him, to the point of showing up to voice him everywhere

A Greek Chorus is a theatrical device originating in ancient Greek theater involving a small group of performers—who are usually unrelated to the central action of a story—commenting on the central action of a play. The chorus speaks directly to the audience and may not interact with the main characters of a story at all. Their purpose is to underscore the moral themes, actions, character development, and messages of a story to the audience.

But those have obvious caucasian faces and they look pretty much like the stylized figures in greek pottery. So there's no proof they are intended to be Blacks

There was also Samoan Hercules. Nobody cared because Greeks aren’t white.

If it wasn't paired with the ideology behind it, it would be a quirky little change. After being brow-beaten for 10 years about race and blackwashing, then after watching companies push for diversity by abandoning merit (among other fricked up things), it's impossible to see it as anything other than an agenda designed to convince the viewer instead of simply entertain. You know the reason they did it wasn't because of "representation" and woke points, but as a fun gig. No one fricking cared because the intentions behind it were pure and this entire culture war we're in the middle of couldn't have been fathomed. It just didn't exist.

Yes it did they have just gotten more obvious and we are more awake to their intent.

I wouldn't even call it "blackwashing" cuz it's just a gimmick for entertainment purposes, they made the Muses/Chorus black so they could sing it all black gospel style and get a lil sassy widdit, while the characters in the story all remain Greek.

It was done in a fun, self aware spirit, not with the spiteful, self-serious "THEY BELONG HERE, OH DO YOU GOTTA PROLLUM??" attitude that prevails in "representation" slop today.

It wasn't during the highest levels of basketball american fatigue. As long I see blacks in tv and movies, relative to their population, as in 14% of the time, then we are good. Otherwise, it becomes a problem.

I didn't see it as blackwashing, I just assumed they were a parody of some black singers in the US.

They did it in a way that was stylistic and didn't felt forced. They weren't making random extras in Hercules black

Because turning the Muses into black gospel soul singers was funny, not intentionally subversive and confrontational.

Things just came out then. There wasn't a year long marketing cycle to question. The movie just happened in front of your face and what they went for worked.
