Tolkien wrote precious little about the second age so except for a few key historical events whose point was mostly to set up LOTR`s main story (like the fall of Numenor, the forging of the rings or the last alliance) this show is going to be purely original content/ filler and as so it likes any kind of value for the canon. Not the first time something like this happens though, those shadow of games (and actually most LOTR satellite media) are always shitting on the lore so that`s nothing special. In any case my point is the whole thing only uses Tolkien`s work as a frame of reference for original content. I don`t know about other fans but i, plain simply, have no interest on that. I guess that when it comes to adaptations fans of the original source material always see themselves as the target audience thinking "hey, i helped grow this IP, it should be FOR ME" but that`s not really how that works.
If he wrote precious little about the second age it's probably because there was precious little to write about. History has a few lulls in it where interesting things just don't happen. That's likely why he didn't bother, he wanted some periods of relative peace to exist. Considering the spending they're doing on it amazon is definitely hoping to recapture all of the audience of the other properties though for anyone who actually cares about LotR I can't see why they would bother. Keep faithful to the original vision or don't bother.

Elrond is noticeably older than his fricking mother in law, Galadriel. He's also angry and miserable. Legolas has fricking blonde hair. Christopher Tolkien despised these films.
The whole thing is different when you get this anal. It's Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings. The show is Payne and McKay's. Neither are Tolkien's. Jackson knew exactly what the aesthetic was and he got it nearly perfect because he genuinely loved the books.

Very simple rational reasons actually:

Or the number of magazine covers with the actors on them?
Every other show on that list obviously doesn't have the benefit of being the "upcoming" thing, and we've seen the show, so we actually know if its shit or not.

Exactly. Amazon thinks if it just throws money and a bunch of sheltered lefty "screenwriters" hired through nepotism at it, they'll succeed. Even without all the shitty trash politics involved and stupid modern sensibilities, they will never achieve what Jackson achieved with his team. What Jackson did was take something everyone believed would fail, on a stupidly low budget, and through sheer hardwork and passion for the project, produced the greatest fantasy film series that will likely ever exist. It has soul, it has devotion, it has a cast who were as dedicated to bringing life to the vision as they were at enjoying themselves while they did it. The kino of the Behind the Scenes on the extended editions shows exactly why the films succeeded (and why the Hobbit films didn't).

Heck everyone including those who never touched the books argree that the elves at Helms Deep was rubbish. Originally freaking Arwen was filmed doing fighting there, but enough people cared to draw a line on that so it got cut avoiding disaster.
