They mentioned at the start that what they think were the leaders were found dead on the ship and the prawns who were left were the laborers. Christopher and his kid were clearly smarter than any other prawn so I assume they were from the leader caste.
I mean it could very well just have been akin to humanities concept of "jobs". The officers and most of the other higher tier crew were killed except for the low tier wagies.
That wouldn't mean the low tier wagies lives weren't valuable enough. We're assuming the Prawn have a rigid, unempathetic culture that wouldn't consider their lives worth it.

I wouldnt say that Wikus is unlikable. He is a homer simpson type bafoon which i think keeps him likable despite his flaws. He is also a beuracrat in a racist system. Blomkamp describes him as a passive racist. His arc is the situation he is put in via the black goo forcing him to sympathise with the prawns and see how unjust their treatment is. To the point where he almost sacrifices himself to help christopher get back to his ship. Wikus is a coward and can be selfish but his intentions are good. although blomkamp states in the directors commentary that this may be because his brain is physically changing to a prawn brain.

He's behaving like a normal person would in that situation. When he knocks out the alien who rescues him, Is that because he's frightened and distraught, he's in the middle of a panic attack and under pain for his transformation. When at the start of the movie he treats the prawns with contempt, Is because everyone does, they're a dangerous species that burns dogs alive for fun and can rip off a man in twain with their bare hands. Overall you wouldn't be much different. The security contractors are the real scumbags, using unlicensed weaponry and killing them for the lulz. The bloodthirsty nigerian warlord is evil. The scientists that force him to use alien weapons against the refugees are evil. Not him.
