This was the DKC spin-off. DK was only in this movie to promote the Universal park expansion with the DK coaster. The fact that they included him despite outright ignoring DK's role in Mario's origin story from the arcade game is a dead giveaway. The purpose of the DK content has been served.

Then why would they go out of their way to render Diddy and Dixie for just a five second cameo? I guarantee you a Donkey Kong movie is in the works.

They already had a base monkey model for extras. It doesn't take as much to doll up some choice cameos from those.

If they're making a Kong movie next, why did they tease a Mario sequel with Yoshi instead? This isn't the late stage MCU, where they tease X and make Y next. Even the early MCU teasers related directly to the next film, not some distant tentpole.

Armisen's take threw me off at first, but it grew on me. I really like the idea of the Mel Brooks-inspired Larry David angle he went with. It just isn't as good as the cartoon VA, who fit Rare's Cranky so well it's still the voice I read all his lines from the games and manuals in. Thing is, there does not exist a world where we were going to get a modern DK anything with a such a good, Rare-faithful Cranky. That isn't how Nutendo works, that isn't how Hollywood works. If there is a DK spinoff coming, I can guarantee you whoever ends up writing it (assuming the strike is resolved and they don't get an AI to do it) has never cracked open a DKC instruction manual and seen Cranky at his best. I can almost as strongly guarantee you they won't even have beaten any of the DKC games, and may never have seen King K. Rool outside of Smash, or DK64 cutscenes at the absolute most. The only person in Hollywood we know has beaten Donkey Kong Country is Emma Stone, and she's not a writer.

Instead of the film being a traveling adventure where Peach and Mario can connect with each other and maybe throw in a B-plot for Luigi the whole movie was just a set up for DK and Mario Kart refrences.

I love DK and I'm more excited for the prospect of a DK film with K. Rool but I actually think DK in the long run made the film worse.

I don't think they'd use K. Rool even if there wasn't some kind of shadow campaign against him within Nintendo. His whole thing is being unhinged (from the games) and having a musical side (from the cartoon, which Japan loved, by the way). The Bowser in the movie was a fricking psycho and he had his viral song. There's nothing for K. Rool to do but have a worse design and not be Jack Black.

Wario will either cameo or be omitted entirely for greater focus on the thrid film similiar to Shadow in Sonic's films.

By a third movie they would run out of characters that could be "hyped" by then, unless you go full Nintendo multiverse

The way they talked about this was sickening. The official story is they went with new enemies because they were absolutely mesmerized by this one gay on the team's shuffling bongo art, and were so fricking enthusiastic about pursuing it instead of restoring all of the classic DKC elements in a game fricking called DKC Returns. They have to know they fricked up, since their next attempt was just Kremlings with the serial numbers filed off. No dignity. Fricking Americans.

This is, for all intents and purposes, Nintendo's design. The design used in the games is Rare's and Nintendo always seemed to sort of low-key resent anything they did with their IP. This is them making a compromise between the original arcade DK Nintendo designed and the more iconic Rare version.

Saying "he carried half the movie" implies the movie wasn't a slog through mud. I think I laughed three times in the 92 minutes this thing went on, and I sure as hell wasn't impressed by the plot, dialogue, character design, or anything else. It was a serviceable-at-best "yup, that's a Mario movie all right" thing that squandered the IP.
