do actors actually deserve any residuals from streamed or syndicated television shows? I'm legitimately curious about this.
Actors are hired for a role in a program entirely owned by companies that are producing it and own the rights to it. They're essentially contractors. Temporary employees who are only relevant to the product till their contract is fulfilled. What entitles them to any revenue share of the product that they were in? The fact that they were in it? Cast & Crew are instrumental in keeping things running, where's their cut? What about directors? Should Tarantino get a paycheck every time someone decides to stream Pulp Fiction? It just feels like we're supposed to blindly cosign their entitlement but I don't know if we should.
"Deserve" is the wrong word. Nobody "deserves" money. It's a negotiation. If they can negotiate more money, good for them. This isn't a moral issue. It's a good thing the federal reserve is run by evil autists and not emotional internet tards.
it's very much being framed through this sense of mush moral right though
That is just to gain support on social media from emotional morons and virtue signalers
>I should get residuals from every patient I keep alive
>I should get residuals on every mile you drive in that car
>I should get residuals on every step you take in those shoes
>I should get residuals when you piss that drink out
Actors and writers deserve to live in squalor, frick em, they're one step above crack prostitutes.
Sewer worker here I should get residuals for every poop you take.
TV and movies are different.
>If you made a deal with A&E and paid me to act cool.
>If you make another deal with Netflix for the same show you need to pay again.
Streaming wasn't around when they made residuals so the studios know they are double dipping in legally grey territory.
>be programmer
>get paid to write code
>people use that code even when you leave the company
>REEEEE PAY ME FOREVER I WROTE IT REEEEE
Actors/writers got paid to do a job. Why should they get residuals?
No. They deserve to be seen as less valuable than prostitutes as they once were. They belong lower than shit.
I would rather actors get paid than israelites
your mom unironically gets residuals because your dad used her pucci
Do teachers deserve residuals for each successfully graduated student for the rest of their lives?
Does a plumber deserve residuals for each properly installed and functional toilet?
Didn't they get paid for the show? Why do they need residuals??
>Didn't they get paid for the show?
Yes.
>Why do they need residuals?
Because boomer media (TV, for profit) generated a lot of money that trickled down generously to boomer actors.
Zoomer media (streaming, still a loss) doesn't make money. It has to be saturated with ads and charge 4 or 5 times as much to be in the same neighborhood as a TV show syndicated in multiple markets.
They got paid to be on the show, and the production company that owns the rights to the show got paid by netflix, some of which went to the actors. Depending on how long Netflix has the rights, they may have to negotiate again, and based on the viewership numbers pay a large sum, part of which would again go to the actors. This is why seinfeld and the friends cast are still making bank, it's not residuals, they're getting paid from rights fees.
Seinfeld and Friends still get daily reruns.
We're not talking about that bud, we're talking about streaming.
Seinfield gets money because he is credited with Larry David as the creators. None of the "actors" get money from that.
>In addition, the cast members received syndication royalties that were scheduled to start in 2000. This was a first in the industry since normally back-end profits, which can be very lucrative, were only offered to stars who were part owners of their shows, like Cosby and Seinfeld.
Friends is a different beast with rare contracts
Then the cast of Suits should take it up with the company that owns the show, not Netflix
>I used my toilet for 30B minutes this week
>But my plumber got $0 in residuals
Why does everything have to be a recurring fee now?
>used toilet 30 billion minutes this week
>Only 10080 minutes in a week
They probably want a bill because of the 2,976,190 people you've been sharing it with
Frick 'em
>do actors actually deserve
No
oh no the poor dutchess
So actors should get a percentage of every profit, should they also get a percentage of every box office bomb and actually owe money to the studios when the flick they made is actually a net loss?
frick the actor/writers. These mofo get paid three times over. Cinema release, airing on tv, steaming service pays for the rights. In the end they own nothing. You pay for usage. Only thing to do to break the chain is actually to buy a Blu-ray copy or pirate. Frick these corporate bastards too. It's the same scam for them. Never stream or watch tv lads. I'll accept buying a Blu-ray for the connoisseurs. But truly.. the Financial model needs to change. I hope Amazon/ netflix/ paramount/ Disney/ Warner Bros and all the others get burned to the ground. Frick em! greedy bastards. One-time pay for all, I don't need to pay for films a hundred times over or hope my movies don't get rotated out of some israeli streaming service.
Nope, they won't be around much longer.
And that's a good thing.
All above the line people worth their salt get residuals. Tarantino gets probably the biggest share from his shit movies. It's standard in any contract where you aren't a starving artist. It's basically profit sharing. Big companies give bonuses or payout dividends in stock. They just want to make sure it's in the contract.
