Well the Fire and Earth nation people do.
The water tribe is meant to look like Native Americans dressed like Eskimos.

Mainly it's the fashion though. For good reason they didn't make the characters look like racist caricatures.

That's not fair, I'm sure there are cute eskimos. Pic is a Native American from the mainland but they're essentially the same race so just imagine this lady in Water Tribe clothes

Mainland tribes are so interbred with Europeans that they diverge significantly from their ancestors appearance wise. Look up actual purebred Eskimos and see for yourself. They don’t look like the Water Tribes in anything but skin tone.

          Anonymous

I'm not saying the Water Tribes are perfect representations of real life eskimos, but they're also cartoons, most cartoon people are drawn to look cuter than real people anyway.
Also I have to reiterate that it's not fair to paint with such a broad brush and act like they all must be ugly. We're talking about a group of people and even among the same 'race' there will be quite a lot of diversity in appearance, it's not like they're dogs where dogs of the same breed will look very similar outside of small variations.

          >epicanthic folds

It's interesting how many people are so stupid they can't figure out they're looking at simplified figures and the brain is projecting onto them like it does with every other simplified "human face" it runs into. We see white people unless a character is drawn like a ching chong stereotype because that's our default setting.

            Anonymous

An epicanthic fold in animation literally is just a line separating the eyelid from the skin above it, which as everyone knows is both more aesthetically pleasing and not a native feature of the Asian phenotype. All the main characters visibly have one.

Avatar's people are inspired by real life minority/ethnic groups, so it's probably the smarter (and only idea) to go with. Hence why the Avatar movie caught flack for unironic whitewashing and horrendous Casting

The whitewashing accusations always felt overblown. The film wasn't wahitewashed with the exception of Katara and Sokka due to exec meddling. The film was miscast.

The whitewashing happened because a rich suit forced his daughter into the production and they had to cast a white actor for Sokka in response to that. While still keeping the rest of the water tribe was asian which was jarring.

The fire nation were also race-bended into being indian and middle eastern which people tend to ignore and focus on Katara and Sokka.

The kid playing Aang and Yue were also mixed race and looked asian.

If anything the film still had a majority non white cast with the exception of Sokka and Katara.

No, the most obvious answer is to stop making live action adaptations.

The thing about anime characters (and cartoons in general) is that every race is able to see themselves in the characters. To someone who is asian, avatar characters look asian. To someone who is white, avatar characters look white. By its nature faces in animation can't really convey the subtlety of racial characteristics as we know them without making a character look old or like a complete caricature. Skin color is really the only strong racial signifier in animation and even that is pretty shifty, especially in a show like avatar where their concept of race doesn't really align with ours. This is why you see people of all races identifying with characters in a way that they don't typically do with live action.

That's the beauty of animation to me, race really matters a lot less.

      Anonymous

As a kid I remember being surprised about the backlash the movie got for casting white actors. I never really considered anyone in the show to be, like, a particular race or anything. Now that I'm older, I can see some characters definitely look more Asian, like Pakku, Long Feng, and the cabbage merchant, and some water tribe members looking pretty indigenous, like Bato and Hama.

I like this, it steps away from making ridiculous caricatures in an effort to look like a particular race. Animation just ain't about that.

In anime, when they want to make a character look white, it's pretty obvious.

East Asians also don't draw obvious epicanthal folds or anything on a character unless they're some average goon, or person on the street.

another example are the Marine Admirals from One Piece. A typical race obsessed westerner would code one as black, Italian, and then maybe Jap/anglo hard ass for Akainu, but they're based on Japanese actors.

I don't frequent these /misc/tourist racebait threads, so I can't tell if it's a regular kind of bait or someone painfully deluded, but these characters look precisely nothing like the Jap actors below. Their facial features are much sharper and less neotenic, i.e. caucasoid, and their skin is literally pink and whites of their eyes too visible.
The guy on the left especially looks nothing like the actor he's supposedly based on, he looks like a bastard baby of Adam Sandler and Jean Reno.

Western art is so much better at drawing Asians while still maintaining a stylized look.

  37. 2 years ago

I think a lot of the characters do look Asian, but not all of them do. Suki looks like a white girl to me, for instance. I know people like to say that anime characters look white but many of them still look Asian to me because they reflect Japanese beauty standards. It is one of the ways you can tell apart Korean artwork from Japanese artwork, even if the art styles are similar they reflect different, subtle preferences in what they think looks attractive and trendy. Anime also stylizes certain features even if they aren't immediately apparent, like how Japanese people have flatter midfaces. A good example is Chi, from Chobits. White women cosplaying as her just look wrong, she only looks good as portrayed by an Asian person.
